The Plot (in a nutshell). At this point in The Garden of Abracadabra, Abby has fled her hometown of Buckeye Heights at her mother’s urgent deathbed plea to return to school at the Berkeley College of Magical Arts and Crafts and, to support herself through school, landed the job of superintendent of the magical, mysterious apartment building on campus. She has discovered that all her tenants are witches, shapeshifters, vampires, wizards, and other supernatural entities and is drawn into a tenants’ love triangle. She has also discovered the supernatural multiple murder in Tilden Park and is reluctantly compelled into the investigation because her vampire tenants at the Garden of Abracadabra are prime suspects. Meanwhile, her ex-fiance, Daniel Stern has come to Berkeley to try to win her back, sparks fly between Abby and Jack Kovac, a troubled magician who heads the FBI’s Supernatural Crimes Unit, and Prince Lastor, a potent supernatural entity in the penthouse, has enchanted her at the first of three dazzling Revels. Abby’s tenant, the storm witch Esmeralda Tormenta, has asked Abby to take Senor, Esmeralda’s shapeshifter lover, for a walk while Senor is in his dog incarnation, but Senor has run away. Animal Control has caught Senor and taken him to the Berkeley Animal Shelter. Maureen at the shelter has called Esmeralda and Esmeralda has bespelled Abby into driving her there to retrieve Senor.

At the shelter, Maureen takes Abby and Esmeralda to the cage where Senor is being held, and Esmeralda confronts him. Abby overhears a high, sweet, purry voice, a magical voice, in her ear.

At the cat habitat, I open the magical little beauty’s cage, lift her out, and set her in the carrying case. Her long, lithe body is shockingly feather-light, her bones fragile beneath the thick white fur. I close the top, and the cat mews piteously as I carry her into the lobby.

Esmeralda is waiting with Senor, now decent in the T and jeans and tennis shoes. Is he embarrassed by his beastly behavior today? The sneer on his face hints not.

“You’ve been a bad, bad boy, Senor,” I say.

He lifts his lip in his trademark snarl and glares at my carrying case.

I return the glare times ten. “You come anywhere near my cat, Senor, and I’ll have you thrown in the pound for the rest of your unnatural life. Esmeralda? Same goes for you. You’ll be history at the Garden of Abracadabra. Got it?”

“We got it, super,” Esmeralda says in her strangely husky voice and smirks. “Senor and me, we like cats.” She circles her arms around Senor’s waist, he circles his arms around her shoulders, and they lock lips.

She’s a different woman after sunset as surely as Senor is a different beast.

I pity Tesla. He doesn’t stand a chance against this dark sex magic. First he’ll need to figure out how to break Tabitha’s curse laid on him, then the curses laid on Senor and Esmeralda. How far have those curses gone? Which way do they go? Has Esmeralda cursed Senor or Senor cursed her? Have they each cursed the other? Or does some witch or sorcerer hold a grudge against them both?

A curse won’t just ruin your day. A curse can ruin your whole life.

This is a very entertaining novel- sort of a down-to-earth Harry Potter with a modern adult woman in the lead. Even as Abby has to deal with mundane concerns like college and running the apartment complex she works at, she is surrounded by supernatural elements and mysteries that she is more than capable of taking on. Although this book is just the first in a series, it ties up the first “episode” while still leaving some story threads for upcoming books. I’m looking forward to finding out more.
