I just discovered these three new reviews of ARACHNE. Unlike a lot of authors, I don’t obsessively check my book pages. I’m too busy with other things, like trying to write new material. And trying to stay alive.
Anyhow, I’m of the “a watched pot never boils” school. If as an author you daily check your reviews and book sales, you’re bound to be daily disappointed.
There’s too much in life I’ve got to be sad and angry about. So I pretty much leave those things alone.
However! I was downloading the print links in seven countries for all my print books—and I found, to my amazement, these three new reviews of ARACHNE.

I’ve always believed from the start of my writing career that science fiction, of all the genres including mainstream, had an obligation to present big ideas, a vision of the future, and meaning.
And not read like a book report, as a lot of science fiction does. No wonder people don’t like it! I’ve always believed in a lively tight style and, above all, characters you really want to care about as a reader.
To be honest, I don’t like being a quarter-century ahead of my time, either. And ARACHNE is still a quarter-century ahead of right Now.
Being too far ahead of one’s time makes it very difficult to make a living as a writer, y’know?

My 9,000-word story, “Arachne”, my FIRST story, got published in OMNI Magazine, then the premiere genre fiction venue. I’ll have much more to say about how that came about later.
This post, however, is about how to turn a shorter work into a longer one.
First off, I don’t recommend it.
You can easily take a little piece of a book and turn it into a coherent, self-contained story. I don’t make a practice of that, either, but have done so in “Crawl Space”, a Garden of Abracadabra spin-off story that’s very charming. And I have plans to write more spin-off stories in the Abracadabra universe, as well as a YA series featuring Becky Budd, a wonderful teenage character who is just finding her way in Real Magic, with the help of Abby Teller.
I also have plans for stories linked in the same universe that, when they’re all written, could be knit together and become a book. Or at least a story collection that feels like a book. I published a story, “Teardrop”, in the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, that got good reviews. This takes place in the Bakdoor universe. I have plans to write more Bakdoor stories. A lot of writers do this, to make good use of a fully developed world and characters.
But what about taking a short story and turning it into a novel? Why do I not recommend the practice?
Because you’re immediately faced with the problem of “padding.” If your story feels self-contained, complete in and of itself, satisfying in and of itself, with a beginning, a middle, and an end, your attempt to expand it will slow the pace to a crawl with useless words, endless descriptions, and silly subplots.
But if you can identify issues in the story that seem “compressed”—as many readers and critics did of the story “Arachne”—then you’ve got a chance for expansion into a good, saleable novel.

The cop said they found Turner’s daughter, but she wasn’t at the Palo Alto PD, she was in Emergency at Stanford Medical. It was bad. Even over the phone, the cop couldn’t conceal the anguish in his voice. Real bad.

Turner told his driver to take the Rolls right up to the Emergency entrance. Three car-accident victims were also coming through, their twisted limbs spelling out some terrible omen.

There had been other hospitals, other calls from Emergency, and Turner had come for her. From the boardroom, making hasty exits from important meetings, he had always come. Anger and displeasure with her had long ago replaced most of the worry. He thought of himself, self-righteously, as fulfilling his fatherly duties at moments like these. He wondered what crazy prank she’d pulled this time.

But nothing could have prepared Turner for what had happened to Angela.

The crisp, mottled thing with no fingers or toes or recognizable face lay packed in ice water beneath a plastic tent. A web of tubes was somehow keeping the alien-looking body alive.

If alive made any sense.

Jeanine, recovering from her faint in the lobby, began a hysterical chant, “How could she do this? How could she do this?”

Turner told her to shut up. Ever the obedient wife, she did.

“Well?” Turner confronted an ashen doctor.

Angela had suffered second- and third-degree burns on more than ninety percent of her body. The cops had found her in some East Palo Alto shooting gallery. The bedroom had gone up like a torch. She and her hoodlum boyfriend had been cooking up a methysynthetic known on the street as blue moon.

The boyfriend hadn’t made it.

Turner assembled these facts in an orderly fashion and filed them neatly in his mind under an incomprehensible heading called Angela. He bent over the tent. Fury filled him.

“Angela,” he said. “You dumb little bitch. I could kill you for this.”

“Mr. Turner,” the ashen doctor said. “She’s not expected to live through the night.”

He didn’t want to in front of all those strangers, but Turner began to cry.

“Arachne,” Lisa Mason’s First Story in Omni Magazine Available for the First Time! Lisa Mason #SFWApro

My first story “Arachne” was published by Omni when the magazine had a worldwide circulation of five million, in Japan by Hayakawa, in Sweden by Republik, and was discussed at some length in Cyberpunk Women, Feminism, and Science Fiction by Carlen Lavigne (McFarland & Co., Inc.).

An H.R. Giger illustration accompanied the story. Giger worked on the design of the alien in Ridley Scott’s film, “Alien,” and on the alien’s creepily organic space craft.

Here’s the photo of me by Peggy Park for the publication of “Arachne” in Omni magazine. Black widow earrings and red-and-black necklace by Tom Robinson.

Review of Literary Movies: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Saving Mr. Banks Lisa Mason

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty has long been in development in Hollywood. Producers loved the short, short ironic novel by the New Yorker writer O. Henry about a repressed and frustrated ordinary office worker who fantasizes of greatness at the drop of a hat. Finally, with Ben Stiller in the lead, the movie got made—and was a box-office flop.

The blending of Mitty’s fantasies with reality approaches magical realism. Though movies are well equipped to handle such imagery, magical realism proves surprisingly difficult to pull off visually. I can understand how the “average moviegoer” could have been confused by this film. You have to be familiar with another magical realism film, The Strange Case of Benjamin Button (another box-office flop), in order to understand one of the (hilarious) visual gags.

In some ways, the written word handles the form better! It’s helpful to be familiar with the novel before viewing this movie.

That said, I found this updated version of the Mitty story quite enjoyable, though at times I even wondered if the entire adventure would prove to be a fantasy at the end. Fortunately, reality saves the day. Stiller is an accomplished comedic actor and pitch perfect in this role, growing the character in a satisfying way. The final punchline is well worth following all the plot gyrations. Recommended.

Saving Mr. Banks is the delightful Story Behind the Story of how Walt Disney convinced P.L. Travers, the prickly author of the Mary Poppins series, to sell her film rights.

I grew up on Mary Poppins, which was first published in the 1930s but stayed in print for decades. P.L. Travers, along with E.B. White, is one of my childhood heroes. I never knew anything about her, nor had I looked her up online. This film (and my later research) reveals that P.L. Travers was not British (she was Australian) despite that the Mary Poppins books are firmly planted in London soil, nor was she “Mrs. Travers,” as she insisted everyone call her. Her beloved alcoholic father’s first name was “Travers”, and the author never married.

The film flips back and forth between the present-day story of how the movie got made, and Travers’ troubled childhood in Australia. Emma Thompson is perfect as the stubborn, eccentric Travers. She clearly knows Mary Poppins’ territory; she wrote the screenplays for and starred in the two delightful Nanny McPhee films. It’s also helpful to be familiar with the first Mary Poppins novel before viewing this movie.

Tom Hanks captures Walt Disney’s character well. (Walt Disney is another childhood hero of mine.) The final revelation of P.L. Travers’ trouble and what Disney had in common with her is very, very satisfying. Recommended.

I’ve got two of my own, Tomorrow’s Child, my Omni story that sold to Universal Studios, which includes a thirty-day blog about all the twists and turns the project took from inception to movie deal, and My Charlotte: Patty’s Story, about how Charlotte’s Web inspired me as a child to become a fantasy writer and influenced my development as a writer, culminating in my first published science fiction story, “Arachne,” in Omni Magazine, and then Arachne, my first novel published by William Morrow. Hitchcock and Psycho (The Movies) and Tomorrow’s Child (My Omni Story That Sold To Universal) Lisa Mason #SFWApro

The British director Alfred Hitchcock made some of the greatest suspense movies of the twentieth century, starting with The Thirty-Nine Steps in 1935 and on to such classics as North by Northwest, Rear Window, Spellbound, and Vertigo. It turns out that Vertigo at the time was a box-office flop and “Hitch” was searching for a hit. But he didn’t want to do another spy thriller like Topaz. He wanted to make a film of the “fiendishly entertaining” bestselling book by Robert Bloch, Psycho.

Hitchcock is the delightful tale of Hitch’s quest to make Psycho in the face of fierce opposition by Paramount Studios. The amazing Anthony Hopkins precisely captures the personality and quirks of “the Master of Suspense.” As another Brit, Hopkins is perfectly cast as Hitch, and as the actor who also played psychotic serial killer Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, the double entendres are hilarious. (Hopkins, as Hitch, waves his arms like an orchestra conductor during the archetypal shower scene; Hopkins, as Hannibal, waves his arms to classical music as he’s working out a diabolical scheme to escape his cage.)

Scarlett Johannson is wonderful in one of her most personable performances as blonde bombshell Janet Leigh. But it is Helen Mirren, as Hitch’s wife Alma, who surprises most. I had no idea Alma was so instrumental to Hitch’s career. She vetted projects, wrote and rewrote scripts, stepped in to direct the set when Hitch was ill for a few days, and—perhaps most importantly—edited the final cut. Her editing of Psycho proved crucial to the film’s runaway success. In Hitchcock, Alma’s character, too, has hilarious references to Psycho. She and Hitch are eating breakfast and discussing the script, and Hitch remarks, “I wonder how the audience will react when I kill the main character in the first hour.” Alma, buttering her toast, says, “Kill her in the first thirty minutes,” and decisively bites. In Psycho, Janet Leigh’s simple supper with Norman Bates is bread and butter and she sits there in her hotel room, innocently buttering up.

I had seen the classic shower scene and the classic shock ending before, but I’d never seen Psycho as a complete movie. Now was the time, after seeing Hitchcock. It is still a pretty scary movie even when you’re familiar with the two most famous scenes, but the film ends with a long exposition about psychotic serial killers delivered by a psychologist. People in 1950 were so shocked by Psycho (and the final very scary shot of Norman Bates) because the existence of such killers among us was not widely known or discussed in the media as it is today. The theme was very original in 1950. The Silence of the Lambs does a much better job of layering in the explanations. Still, Lambs pays homage to Psycho is subtle ways, such as the young woman about to become a victim driving in her car toward her fate.

One of the spooky details in Psycho is the appearance of birds everywhere—Norman Bates’ “hobby” is taxidermy but, with one notable exception, he only stuffs birds. There are pictures of birds on the walls of the hotel room and lamps with birds as the base. Hitchcock echoes this decorating theme, too, and the final observation—that Hitch is searching for a new project and historically, his next project, The Birds, is two years in the future—adds just the right touch.

So there you have it, my friends. I love “The Story Behind The Story” kinds of stories, and Hitchcock is a superb one. See it as a triple bill with Psycho and The Silence of the Lambs and have pizza or pasta with red wine. Highly recommended.
