The Latest Thing

If you need to retool (as I recently did), be sure to determine what is the latest iteration of whatever you’re acquiring.

Sounds like a no-brainer? Four years ago when my beloved Apples died (after 8 years!), I decided to switch to a Windows PC. I chose Dell because they have a good reputation and I like their designs.

The sales rep cheerfully sold me two computers (one to be on the Internet, one off) with Windows Vista.

Right out of the box, it turned out that Vista had been outdated not just once, but twice!

The computers worked fine, and the non-Internet machine where I do my real work is still going strong.

But the Internet computer got hack-attacked, and AOL’s new 9.7 is incompatible with Vista. The AOL customer service rep just happened to mention that 9.7 is compatible with the new Windows 8.

Dell sent me a brochure in May. That’s May, 2013. The dozen computers listed had Windows 7! (And they weren’t deeply discounted, either). Only two had Windows 8.

Right out of the box, the printer/scanner I acquired (my sweet little HP Laserjet also got obsoleted) instructed people with Windows 7 to perform a hellish workaround in order to become compatible.

Man! I can only wonder how well Windows 7 works with AOL 9.7. I shudder to think!

So there you have it, my friends. It’s kind of like when the grocery store puts a bag of potato chips on sale. You think “cool,” take it home, only to notice that the bag has reached its expiration date.

Only a bag of chips is not quite the same as a pricy computer!

Yell, Scream, Beg, Plead

Yell, scream, beg, plead. No, I’m not talking about Fifty Shades of Grey. I’m talking about my recent experience with two Giant Corporations, whose goods and services I needed to get retooled.

In both cases, I spoke with six people, listened for hours to bad Musak while On Hold, before I finally connected with that magic 7^th person who got the job done. Is that what this world has come to? You have to yell, scream, beg, plead—and threaten to go to the competition—before you can get the simplest thing done?

Going High Speed

When I finally decided to go high speed, I called AT&T, which provides my phone service. The rep signed me up to receive the router/modem by UPS, install it myself. “It’s so simple, even an idiot can so it.”

Then stalled on the delivery 14 days. When the equipment didn’t show up on the “due date,” I called, found out someone had bungled the order and the router hadn’t even been scheduled at the warehouse and would be delayed for another 7 days.

Yelled, screamed, begged, pleaded. Got that magic 7^th person who comp’d me a “technician-provided” install. Meaning a human being showed up the next day with the equipment in hand.

Not only was the router a big, intimidating tech thingie with blinking lights (I feel like I’m piloting the Starship Enterprise), but it didn’t work!

Technician had to return, rewire the phone jack, the phone line leading out of my house, AND the phone box on my street. No way could I have done all that myself! (Didn’t hurt that the technician was a handsome Italian guy.)

Retooled After Hack-Attack!

Retooled! Hack-attacked and obsoleted by AOL 9.7 all at the same time! What a drag. Took 14 days offline to get back up and running. In the meantime, finished Celestial Girl, Books 3 and 4, assembled Celestial Girl; The Omnibus Edition. Will have links! Also, Strange Ladies: 7 Stories, a collection of short science fiction/fantasy published in magazines and anthologies worldwide, got done, is in the final proofing stage. Should be good to go in a couple of days. Whoo-hoo!

Tomorrow! How I Fixed Format for Smashwords (and I’m Not a Techie!)

I figured out how to fix a vexing format problem for Smashwords and qualified for the Premium Catalog, so the books will ship to the Apple iBookstore, Kobo, Sony, Diesel, and more!

I’ll tell you about it tomorrow.

Today, I’m having technical difficulties with AOL and Internet Explorer, so I’m nearly three hours behind in my work. (Sigh.)

The Internet is a lot like the little girl with a little curl right in the middle of her forehead. When she’s good, she’s very, very good. And when she’s bad, she’s horrid!

Ruby Tuesday

Tuesday is ruled by Mars, the Roman god of war, passion, anger, and aggression. His color is fiery red. It’s no surprise that the expression for rage is “seeing red.”

To be in harmony with Tuesday, wear something red. For jewelry, wear a ruby, garnet, or carnelian.

To enhance the fiery energy of Mars in a positive way, eat something red: an apple, strawberries, tomatoes, any kind of tomato sauce.

I like to make “Mexican rice” on Tuesday. In a tablespoon of olive oil, sautee onion, green onions, fresh or canned tomato, red and green bell peppers. Season with chili powder, garlic, and lemon pepper. Add corn kernels and red kidney beans or black beans. Mix in about three cups of cooked organic brown rice and three veggie sausage patties, broken into pieces. (I like Morning Star.) Season to taste with chili pepper sauce to taste (Trader Joe’s is very good). Optional: top with grated low-fat cheese.

So there you have it, my friend.

Tap into the fiery passion of Mars to get you through the rest of the week, but beware of the three A’s: anger, aggression, and accidents.
