The Second Fundamental of Real Magic that Abby Teller learns at the Berkeley College of Magical Arts and Crafts is “Mind Gleams In Every Atom Of The Universe.”

What on earth does that mean?

I’ll let Professor Isaac Bonwitch explain:

“Mind gleams in every atom of the Universe,” Professor Bonwitch tells our class. “From cosmology to quantum physics, scientists agree that the Universe is alive, not dead. Not empty. The great horticulturist Luther Burbank observed that every atom, plant, animal, person, and planet is an intelligent entity comprised of great organized forces, held in place by even greater forces of inconceivable power. Now. What does that mean for you and me? Anyone? Abby?”

“Real Magic operates through the Living Mind of the Universe?” I venture. As I answer, my mother’s urgent deathbed plea strikes me anew. Will these lessons in Real Magic truly help me overcome the real dangers facing me?

“Precisely,” Bonwitch says.

Bonwitch then expands on how this Fundamental functions:

“Together with the Living Mind of the Universe,” Bonwitch continues, “you create your own reality on this plane of existence. This co-creatorship occurs always, whether you are aware of it or not. You follow?”

But several students object to this statement, and Abby and the other students discuss whether Bonwitch’s statement could possibly be true when the whole world seems to shape and influence your life, often in ways that are harmful, even fatal. Which leads them into a debate over good and evil magic and its consequences.

Mind Gleams! The Universe is alive, not dead, my friends.

This is a very entertaining novel- sort of a down-to-earth Harry Potter with a modern adult woman in the lead. Even as Abby has to deal with mundane concerns like college and running the apartment complex she works at, she is surrounded by supernatural elements and mysteries that she is more than capable of taking on. Although this book is just the first in a series, it ties up the first “episode” while still leaving some story threads for upcoming books. I’m looking forward to finding out more.
