Both articles–“Prevent and Protect: Focus on Your Eyes” in the April 2022 issue of Real Simple Magazine and “Eyes, Check” in the May 2022 issue of Martha Stewart Living Magazine–recommend yearly eye checks. Both are very enjoyable magazines, commenting on gardening, home decoration, health, and recipes galore.
Both articles say that staring at a blue light or a white light of your computer screen doesn’t ruin your vision (thank goodness!), but can cause eye strain. (I almost bought a pair of glasses from a catalog that claimed the glasses would shield your vision from the light of the computer screen.) And staring at a computer screen can indeed interfere with your sleep—so cease and desist at least an hour before you sleep.
Both articles address cataracts (common), macular degeneration (the leading cause of blindness for people over age 65), glaucoma, near-sightedness (90% of people over age 45 have this), and taking off your contact lenses. (Contact lenses are a great idea, but they didn’t work for me. They were painful. I lost a job interview because I was squinting and blinking so much.)
Both articles recommend wearing sunglasses to shield your eyes from damaging sunlight. I would add also wear a baseball cap with a bill or a hat with a broad brim to shield your eyes from sunlight coming in from above your sunglasses. And clean your eyes at night before you sleep (Rinse them off with water.) And definitely take off any eye makeup.
Both articles are Recommended.
