Over the Christmas weekend, we saw “Genius,” “Don’t Bother To Knock,” and “The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao.”

“Genius,” with Colin Firth, Jude Law, and Nicole Kidman, is about Max Perkins of Scribner & Sons and his editorial and personal relationship from 1929 until 1938 with Thomas Wolfe, the bestselling author of Look Homeward, Angel. I read that book in high school.

Loved the film. I laughed. I cried. I related (I once hand-delivered an overwritten manuscript in a three-foot-high packing crate.) I commiserated. I marveled at the publishing business of yesteryear, which was a far different enterprise than it is today.

“Oh pencil, oh cruel red pencil, you who obliterate the exultation of my soul, the despondency of my heart, the glorious wind-blown gold of my prose which, it sometimes seems, emanates from the angels themselves.”

(That’s my Thomas Wolfe knock-off. You like?)

I cried at the sentimental, true-story ending. Good thing I like sentimental endings.

Didn’t know Thomas Wolfe died eighteen days short of his thirty-eighth birthday of tuberculosis.

I’m glad to be alive!

Recommended.

Piracy of ebooks is not a victimless crime. If you use any of these websites to download my copyrighted ebooks, those books are not “free.” You’re stealing from me, taking food off my family’s table. I’m the victim when you download or read off of any of these scam sites.

I’ve neither been properly paid for my copyrighted content nor have I given my consent for their “free” publication. These sites have simply stolen DRM-free copies of my ebooks.

I’m a working author! I put my heart and soul and brains into my books and stories. Please help me by not patronizing these websites.

Here is a list of some sites I’ve collected, thanks to Google Alerts. The biggest offender, Tzar Media, appears at the top. They have denied offering my books repeatedly and suggest that I go to each one of their individual vendors with my Cease-and-Desist Demand.

Sadly, these individual vendors require your credit card information before you are allowed to enter their “free” website and contact their webmasters. Would you give that info to a pirate?

So here are the pirates in the Hall of Shame I’ve collected so far, thanks to Google Alerts:

Then I’ve also heard about Torrent. This is a notorious pirate of ebooks. Please don’t go there.

And here is the complete list of my copyrighted ebooks, which Bast Books offers for a ridiculously inexpensive price. Most have been previously published in print by Big Five Publishers.

When I was age eight, my parents liked to go out nearly every Saturday night. They’d lived through the rationing and privations of World War II. The Fifties and Sixties brought huge prosperity to America. I can’t blame my parents for wanting to enjoy themselves.

My mother was a professional nutritionist in a large hospital at a time when wives and mothers typically didn’t work. My father was an electrical engineer and inventor. As first-generation Americans born of immigrants who’d escaped the Iron Curtain, they were doing pretty well in Cleveland, Ohio where I was born.

So my parents would get dressed up and go out Saturday night, leaving me alone in their house. I suppose they trusted me, with my Siamese cat for company. Maybe they never considered whether I would have liked some human companionship on those long nights. In any case, they never hired a babysitter.

Both of my parents were only children, each with brothers who had died before they were born. So I had no aunts or uncles, no cousins of my age I could call. My maternal grandmother lived nearby, but she was taking care of my grandfather with Parkinson’s disease and went to bed early.

I have vivid memories of being alone in that big, dark house, feeling very lonely and often scared.

The furnace would go on with ominous monster-in-the-basement rumblings. If there was wind, the house itself creaked and groaned. My mother would turn off all of the lights on the second floor and most of the lights on the ground floor except in the family room, where there was a library and the television. Then there was what I was watching on television.

In those days, Cleveland carried a couple of channels that aired reruns of TV shows and movies. “The Xanti Misfits” and the episode where a queen bee turns herself into a beatnik woman who tries to seduce the scientist-beekeeper (I think that one is called “Regina”) on The Outer Limits; “Demon With A Glass Hand,” on The Twilight Zone; and Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo were memorably scary to an eight-year-old.

(I’m quite sure the gorgeous footage of San Francisco in the early 1950s imprinted itself on my subconscious mind. After I spent some time in Washington D.C., I made a beeline for the Bay Area. We have Vertigo in our collection to this day and I still hate the ending!)

I’m very thankful the station didn’t air Psycho. I would have never taken a shower again.

To assuage my loneliness, I’d make a short trek through the dark dining room to the kitchen where my mother would leave some under-the-counter lights on.

And there I’d make popcorn. My mother had this electric popcorn machine, an aluminum canister with a round handle of glass on the top and a wire that plugged into the bottom and into a wall outlet. I’d pour corn oil up to a line etched inside (at the time, I didn’t know corn oil is considered bad, nutrition-wise; it was the only oil my mother kept around). Then I’d pour in a third-cup of Jolly Time. I preferred the blue label containing white corn, which made a meatier, crunchier kernel. The red label, which contained yellow corn, made a bigger, fluffier kernel but it didn’t have as much taste.

I knew the drill. Pour everything in, plug the machine in. When the popped corn pressed up against the glass handle, and the machine steamed, and I could smell a bit of burning at the bottom, I’d whip off the wire. Using oven mitts, I’d carefully pour the canister into a bowl. I put nothing else on the popcorn except Morton’s salt (a lot of it).

I’ve never liked Coke, then or now, but I did like a grape soda pop my father kept in the fridge. It tasted like carbonated grape Kool-Aid. I’d pour a glass of that to wash my salty popcorn down, waiting for my parents to come home and turn on the lights.

Nowadays, I use Arrowhead Mills Organic popcorn, organic extra virgin olive oil, and Mediterranean sea salt. I’ve got a Lindy’s stainless steel popper, with a paddle on the bottom and a wood handle on the top. You crank the handle, which turns the paddle around while the corn is popping. This makes superb popcorn. I still burn the bottom a bit. I love a few burned kernels, but that’s just me.

The Lindy’s is kind of a hassle to clean, though, and I usually don’t want the extra fat. So I’ll haul out my West Bend air popper. This miraculous machine produces a bowl of virtually fat-free, fiber-rich comfort food in minutes. I still sprinkle on too much salt. Nobody’s perfect.

So there you have it. What’s your favorite comfort food and why?

At her mother’s urgent deathbed plea, Abby Teller enrolls at the Berkeley College of Magical Arts and Crafts to learn Real Magic. To support herself through school, she signs on as the superintendent of the Garden of Abracadabra, a mysterious, magical apartment building on campus.

She discovers that her tenants are witches, shapeshifters, vampires, and wizards and that each apartment is a fairyland or hell.

On her first day in Berkeley, she stumbles upon a supernatural multiple murder scene. One of the victims is a man she picked up hitchhiking the day before.

Torn between three men—Daniel Stern, her ex-fiance who wants her back, Jack Kovac, an enigmatic FBI agent, and Prince Lastor, a seductive supernatural entity who lives in the penthouse and may be a suspect—Abby will question what she really wants and needs from a life partner.

Compelled into a dangerous murder investigation, Abby will discover the first secrets of an ancient and ongoing war between Humanity and Demonic Realms, uncover mysteries of her own troubled past, and learn that the lessons of Real Magic may spell the difference between her own life or death.

“So refreshing. . . .This is Stephanie Plum in the world of Harry Potter.”
Goodreads: “I loved the writing style and am hungry for more!”

Amazon.com: “Fun and enjoyable urban fantasy”
This is a very entertaining novel—sort of a down-to-earth Harry Potter with a modern adult woman in the lead. Even as Abby has to deal with mundane concerns like college and running the apartment complex she works at, she is surrounded by supernatural elements and mysteries that she is more than capable of taking on. Although this book is just the first in a series, it ties up the first “episode” while still leaving some story threads for upcoming books. I’m looking forward to finding out more.”

10.29.15.GILDEDAGEBIG

The Gilded Age is a companion book to Summer of Love, A Time Travel and A New York Times Notable Book and New York Public Library Recommended Book. The book has a different set of characters, but also involves the Luxon Institute for Superluminal Applications and Chiron Cat’s Eye in Draco.

The year is 1895 and immigrants the world over are flocking to California on the transcontinental railroad and on transoceanic steamships. The Zoetrope demonstrates the persistence of vision, patent medicines addict children to morphine, and women are rallying for the vote. In San Francisco, saloons are the booming business, followed by brothels, and the Barbary Coast is a dangerous sink of iniquity. Atop Telegraph Hill bloody jousting tournaments are held and in Chinatown the tongs deal in opium, murder-for-hire, and slave girls.

Zhu Wong, a prisoner in twenty-fifth century China, is given a choice–stand trial for murder or go on a risky time-travel project to the San Francisco of 1895 to rescue a slave girl and take her to safety. Here’s my interview for “Anything For You,” my story in the September-October 2016 Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. You can find it online at https://www.sfsite.com/fsf/blog/2016/10/17/interview-anything-for-you-by-lisa-mason/

– Tell us a bit about “Anything for You.”

Sometimes writers find their characters taking on a life of their own. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle famously became jealous of his character, Sherlock Holmes, who was more famous than the author himself. Conan Doyle tried to kill off Sherlock Holmes, but Holmes refused to die. Perhaps, too, the fans refused to let Holmes die.

Readers, especially fans, also experience the phenomenon of fiction becoming more real in their imaginations than reality. When a character whom fans love does something fictitiously they don’t approve of, fans get angry.

What if fans could interactively participate in the creative process? The emotional stakes would be high.

– What was the inspiration for this story, or what prompted you to write it?

My longtime friend and colleague, the German writer and editor Myra Çakan, asked me to contribute a story to an anthology which she’d titled Interactive. She envisioned all sorts of scenarios of modern life that could be interactive in a slightly futuristic way. That got my creative wheels turning.

That’s what I love about being invited to contribute to themed anthologies. The editor’s vision inspires me to explore directions I might not otherwise go. I wrote an 1890s stage magic story, Every Mystery Unexplained, for David Copperfield’s Tales of the Impossible and a Chinese unicorn story, Daughter of the Tao, for Peter S. Beagle’s Immortal Unicorn, among many other stories and anthologies. If those editors hadn’t proposed a theme, I would never have researched and written those stories.

Myra had a German publisher lined up and maybe a dozen writers, including me and, I believe, William Gibson.

Then the German publisher, as apparently German publishers are wont to do, folded before the project could get up and running.

So there I was with a story without a home. Since F&SF is The New Yorker of genre magazines, that seemed like a great place to submit the story. And it was!

– Was “Anything for You” personal to you in any way? If so, how?

I don’t understand fandom. I appreciate certain writers, singers, artists, and actors, of course, but I don’t obsess over their output or them, personally.

Some years ago, I attended a science fiction discussion group held at a member’s home. I excused myself to use the bathroom and was shocked to see that she had a lovingly framed picture of Mr. Spock on her bathroom wall! What was that about?

So I wanted to explore a fan’s obsession from the inside out.

– What would you want a reader to take away from this story?

That no matter how hard anyone tries—family members, spouse, or the government—they ultimately can’t control you. Especially your thoughts and emotions and who you choose to love.

One of our unique human gifts is that we can always choose how to react to life. No one can ever take our inner choices away from us.

– What are you working on now?

New stories and novellas, of course!

I’m working on uploading the rest of my backlist as ebooks. My ebook publisher, Bast Books, just published Arachne on all major retailers worldwide. Arachne, a “cyberpunk,” is my first novel, which was published in hardcover by William Morrow, trade paper by Eos Books, and mass market paperback by AvoNova books. Arachne debuted in the top ten on the Locus Magazine Hardcover List. I’m delighted to send the book, newly re-edited, back out into the reading world.

I’ve only got three more backlist books to go, Cyberweb, the sequel to Arachne, and my two Pangaea books. Then I’m all caught up.

Going forward, I’m excited to announce that I have signed with a major New York literary agency and am working on a new high-concept SF novel.

And here are two reviews!

Anything for You” by Lisa Mason is a near future SF story of Willem’s obsession with Dr. Virginia Isley. She is not his wife—or even his girlfriend—but a fictional character in an interactive television show. For Willem love is all about control, but he soon finds that some people—real or not—refuse to be controlled.
Mason does a masterful job here telling this in the form of a television script, including the plot options Willem is allowed to choose. . . . an enjoyable read.

9-16-16-athena-in-sun-2

To celebrate the Autumnal Equinox—and Athena’s second birthday, we made a pasta dinner and watched some movies. Athena is the first cat whose birthday I know. All the other cats were adopted some time later in their lives and I never found out when they were actually born. Athena mostly slept through the movies in her kitty cup.

First up, was “Captain America: Civil War.” I like many of the Marvel movies, but not all. The first “Captain America,” the first “Avengers,” the first “Iron Man” were great. “Ant-Man” was terrific. But the parade of sequels often leaves much to be desired. “Civil War” is a good example. Chaotic plot, a retread of the world’s negative reaction to the Avengers from the previous two films, quiet “personal” moments that drag, then over-the-top action sequences that last too long. Reasonably entertaining, but if you’ve got something better to spend two hours on, skip this.

Next, “Coriolanus.” Ralph Fiennes produced this modern take on a Shakespeare play, with modern warfare and settings but characters speaking in Elizabethan English. A very acquired taste that won’t work for everyone.

Lastly, “Zootopia,” an animated film entirely populated by talking animals, was completely wonderful. We like animation, anyway, and this is right up our alley. Highly recommended!
