At 5 p.m. on a sunny day, I was walking around Lake Merritt as I’ve done virtually every day since 1996. July 11 was the thirty-eighth anniversary of Tom Robinson’s and my first date, and I was planning a special dinner. I was going to bake pizza.

I was walking on the remodeled bridge of Lakeshore Boulevard where the sidewalk angles around the back of 1200 Lake Shore, a midcentury high-rise apartment and a switchback heads down to the lake. Suddenly I heard yelling. I looked to my left and saw an Hispanic man running up the slope amid the flowering bushes, his face and eyes filled with hate. I was shocked. I’ve never seen hate like that on a person’s face.

In one second he was up on the sidewalk with me. He pulled his fist back to punch my face. I ducked. Then he shoved me as hard as he could toward a pedestrian ramp leading to 12th Street and two lanes of oncoming cars speeding around the curve onto Lakeshore. I back-pedaled with my feet, lost my balance, and, fell, hard, on my right hip on the concrete half in the street. I rolled over to a sitting position, but I couldn’t stand or move. My right leg lay at an odd angle.

Three bicyclists surrounded me with their bikes, shielding me from him. I looked to my left and saw him striding down the sidewalk, yelling, about to accost another woman, an Asian-American. She witnessed the Attack and backed away. Then he advanced on a white man and they exchanged yells. Then he ran down the sidewalk to the lake.

Two women approached me with their cellphones. One called 911, calling for the police and an ambulance. One called Tom at home, who was able to arrive at the scene two minutes later, thanks to a neighbor who was pulling out of her driveway.

A police car pulled up, the officer got out, and took my story as fast as I could tell it. Then he got back in and sped away. In another minute, police cars were speeding around with their sirens on. A police car and officer stopped by me and got my full story.

An ambulance finally arrived and lifted me, screaming in pain, inside. They closed the doors. The police had apprehended the Hispanic man and brought him, handcuffed, to the ambulance doors. “That’s him,” I said. The ambulance attendant told me the Hispanic man had bitten a police officer in the course of the arrest.

The ambulance took me to Highland Hospital, where they immediately X-rayed me. When I came out of X-ray, a doctor said, “You’ve fractured your right hip. We can fix it but you should know,” he said, “that some people with this kind of injury are dependent for life.”

Nice thing to say to a woman on a gurney screaming in pain.

They took me to a little room in the Emergency Wing, (I’ll write more about that later), then to the surgery room where I underwent three hours of surgery under general anesthetic.

Hours later, when I woke in the Recovery Room, an Oakland police officer came to see me. He was the first responder and he apologized for speeding away from the scene, leaving me lying there. He said he had to secure the area. I told him I was very glad they’d arrested the Hispanic man, and he said, “He’s a very violent man.” He said, “The Oakland police are committed to keeping the streets safe.” He said, “You’re safe.”

NO, I AM NOT SAFE.

I was healthy, physically active every day (I walked around the lake), eating a mostly vegetarian diet, never smoked anything, no medications, no medical conditions. THE ATTACK HAS MADE ME A CRIPPLE.

Tom and I were leading a peaceful, very private life, working on our art and writing careers, and enjoying life. THE ATTACK HAS RUINED OUR LIVES.

Everyday actions are an ordeal. Sitting on the toilet set to piss and shit is an ordeal. Standing up from the toilet is an ordeal. Sliding my feet out of bed and standing up is an ordeal. Sitting down and sliding my feet back in is an ordeal. Tom has to lift and lower me. Walking down the hall from our bedroom to my bathroom is a twenty-minute ordeal (it used to be five minutes) during which I have to pause. Walking on the walker tires me out, hyperventilate, and sweat.

I don’t know how FINANCIALLY RUINOUS this will be. Tom served as a base medic at the age of eighteen in Vietnam and was discharged with high honors. The Veteran’s Association covers him completely and he’s had several minor procedures there. As for me, I’m healthy as described above. I was cruising along on minimum medical insurance. I don’t know how much a three-hour surgery is going to cost, let alone an ambulance. I’ve never ridden in an ambulance.

Your donations to my Medical Expenses, Recuperation, and Physical Rehabilitation Fund will be gratefully appreciated. I’m at https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/lisamasonthewriter

Thank you for your kindness.

I AM NOT SAFE.

I’M NOT SAFE when the shameful Mayor of Oakland warned eight hundred KNOWN VIOLENT CRIMINALS that ICE was planning to apprehend them.

This is not about Left or Right, Liberal or Conservative, Democrat or Republican. This is about the SAFETY of Americans. About the American values of respect for the law and respect for people.

I welcome immigrants. Highland Hospital is a marvel of immigrants. I’ve never seen so many different shades of skin color or heard English spoken in so many trilling native accents. I was grateful for the help of the wonderful folks at Highland during my terrible time of need.

But those who want to abolish ICE and open the border, WAKE UP.

The good people—and I have no doubt there are good people—need to go through the legal process just like the folks at Highland. If an undocumented person enlists in and serves in the U.S. military, he or she has earned citizenship. But open borders invites in VIOLENT criminal gangs and a VERY VIOLENT man like the Attacker. They don’t respect America or Americans or the American values of respect for the law, respect for people.

I’ll be off the Internet again for a week while I recuperate for next my appointment at Highland Hospital during which I’m hoping they’ll remove the staples from my incisions.

I’ve never seen such hate on a person’s face. Stop the hate.

Tell us a bit about “The Bicycle Whisperer.”

The title references the 1995 novel, The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans and the story’s plot evokes some of the novel’s essentials. A girl and her beloved horse are severely injured in an accident. The injuries aren’t just physical, but also emotional. In a desperate attempt to heal girl and horse, the girl’s mother takes her on an arduous cross-country trip in search of a man with an uncanny sympathy with horses, especially damaged horses. A horse whisperer. He helps heal both the girl and the horse and reconciles horse with rider.

Readers and reviewers have responded emotionally to “The Bicycle Whisperer”, some disturbed by the end, some finding the story sad, some believing the forgiveness. I’m just glad people are responding emotionally. Emotions are what fiction is all about, even science fiction.

What was the inspiration for this story, or what prompted you to write it?

I was pushing a shopping cart out of the grocery store when I noticed a teenager wandering around the parking lot. He was hitting up shoppers for money. They ignored or shunned him. He had that confused, despondent look of someone who had just been kicked out of the house or fled from there, for his own reasons.

I put my groceries in the car and rummaged around in the glove compartment. I almost never carry cash these days! I found only a crumpled dollar, approached him, and offered it. I said, “Promise me you won’t spend this on drugs.” He gratefully took the dollar and said, “I promise.” I said, “Are you going to be okay?” He gave me a sunny smile and said, “Sure.” And it was like looking down into his soul.

When I drove away, imagining what his life was like, the Lone Rangerette stepped out of the shadows and said, “Forget about him, you are going to write about me!” “The Bicycle Whisperer” is as much her story as Shimano Stella’s and Simon’s. With luck and work, the Lone Rangerette, her sentient bicycle Scout Regalia, and her mobile AI Tekto may have their own YA novel in a year or so.

Was “The Bicycle Whisperer” personal to you in any way? If so, how?

I’m fascinated by people’s propensity to anthropomorphize everything. From the love we lavish on our pets (I’m a crazy cat lover myself) to attachments people form to inanimate objects. I had a college friend who was inordinately attached to his beat-up Chevy. He’d gone through several unhappy romantic relationships, but his car—he called her “Clementine”—stayed with him through thick and thin. Just the other day, a reader posted on my Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/lisa.mason.7393264), saying how much he appreciated the story and that he seriously loved his bicycle from 1974 when he was in college in Austin, Texas. And he referred to his bicycle as “she.”

I’ve enjoyed the sentient car stories recently published in F&SF so I was inspired to write about a sentient bicycle and her troubles. It’s not so far of a stretch to imagine how emotionally attached people could become to AI. Would AI have emotions, too? By definition not, but it’s fun to imagine that they would.

What are you working on now?

More stories, always! The YA mentioned above, set in a gritty near-future. A high-concept SF novel. And an urban fantasy. I’m even revisiting a concept I filed in the to-do box, involving a woman detective in 1960s San Francisco. The latter is not fantasy or science fiction, but I enjoy mysteries and should probably write at least one.

Anything else you’d like to add?

As always, people can visit me at http://www.lisamason.com for my newly reissued trade paperback books, ebooks, interviews, blogs, adorable cat pictures, and my husband Tom Robinson’s bespoke art, mobiles, and jewelry. My latest novella, published in trade paperback and as an ebook, is One Day in the Life of Alexa, and has been well received with five-star reviews.

So there you have it, my friends! The May-June issue will be on the newsstands for only two more weeks. Look for it!

On May 27, 2018—one week ago today—the heartbreaking news was that Gardner Dozois had died suddenly in a hospital of an infection at the age of seventy.

As most people in the science fiction and fantasy business know, Dozois was the editor of Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine for many years, the editor of the indispensable Year’s Best Science Fiction anthologies for an astounding thirty-seven years, and a published writer himself, most recently with stories in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, the January-February 2018 issue with “Neanderthals“ (my story in that issue was “Aurelia”) and the May-June 2018 issue with “Unstoppable” (my story in that issue was “The Bicycle Whisperer”). His wife, the writer Susan Casper, had died after long and painful illnesses a year ago.

At the beginning of my writing career, Dozois acquired four stories of mine for Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine, enabling me to build a publishing resume that served as a platform for me to sell my first novel, Arachne, to William Morrow in hardcover, in trade paperback by Eos, in mass market paperback by AvoNova, and in another trade paperback edition by Bast Books. Nine novels have followed, a short story collection, several screenplays, and a major movie deal based on the short story, “Tomorrow’s Child”, published in Omni Magazine.

I’m eternally grateful for Gardner for giving me a chance back in the day. Although Asimov’s, the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, and Analog are small-format magazines, don’t pay much, and have limited distribution, the competition among writers—even established writers with many novels to their names—to be published in those forums is fierce.

I met Gardner only briefly three times, after I’d sold stories to him—once at the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Author-Editor Reception in New York; a second time at the WorldCon in San Francisco; and a third at the WorldCon in Los Angeles. He was gracious and friendly on all three occasions. Countless other writers and editors deemed him a dear friend and a regular at Science Fiction World Conventions (“WorldCons”) and other venues. A lively fixture who will be greatly missed.

And so. The first story I sold to Gardner was “Guardian,” about an African-American gallerist who must fight a brutal burglar preying on her condo building with voodoo. The next was “The Oniomancer,” about a punk Chinese-American bicycle messenger who finds an alien artifact on the street.

Both stories now appear in my collection Strange Ladies: 7 Stories (“A must-read collection—The San Francisco Review of Books) on Nook, US Kindle, Canada Kindle, UK Kindle, Smashwords, Apple, and Kobo. On Kindle world wide in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Japan, India, Mexico, and Netherlands. NOW IN PRINT at https://www.amazon.com/Strange-Ladies-Stories-Lisa-Mason/dp/1981104380/ and IN PRINT at Barnes and Noble at https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/strange-ladies-lisa-mason/1115861322.

Next up was “Deus Ex Machina,” a novelette republished in a number of foreign editions. The story follows a book editor who must deal with the next Big Earthquake in downtown San Francisco and, in the midst of the crisis, meets a sexy man who turns out to be not what he claims to be. I felt I had so much story there that I retitled the piece “Shaken,” expanded it, and republished it as a short novel at on US Kindle, Canada Kindle, UK Kindle, BarnesandNoble, Apple, Kobo, and Smashwords. Also on Kindle in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Japan, India, Mexico, and Netherlands.

6.3.18.SHAKENCOVERSMALLER

Finally, Gardner bought “Hummers,” about a woman dying of cancer who learns to reconcile herself to her impending death through Egyptian magic and the hummingbirds who visit her feeder. I remember walking up to Gardner at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, where he sat in the lobby at a table with a bunch of editors and thanking him for buying “Hummers.” And he said, loud enough for everyone to hear, “That was a good story.” “Hummers” was nominated for the Nebula Award (the late Roger Zelazny voted for it) and chosen for the Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror 5th Annual Collection (St. Martin’s Press). The award-winning Terri Windling, one of the editors of the anthology, wrote a beautiful introduction. I’ve also published this as an ebook short story at Hummers (in Fifth Annual Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror) on BarnesandNoble, US Kindle, Canada Kindle, UK Kindle, Apple, Kobo, and Smashwords. Also on Kindle in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, and India.

So there you have it, my friends. Short stories are a part of the culture, a part of literature, an important way for writers to express themselves and for readers to appreciate their work and their consciousness.
