”Ever since the Save Betty project completed there has been degradation in the archives. The Luxon Institute for Superluminal Applications (LISA, still love that acronym) has determined that San Francisco in 1967 is a hot dim spot. They commission the Summer of Love project. Twenty-one year old Chiron Cat’s Eye in Draco will t-port from 2467 to the summer of love where he is to find the Axis, a teenage girl from the Midwest will have important descendants, and protect her through the summer. This Susan Stein takes an alias, so Chiron has only probabilities to know if he finds the right girl.
In 1967 Susan receives a postcard from Nance, aka Penny Lane, who is in San Francisco. Her parents find the postcard, tear it up and burn it. She runs away that night and takes the name Starbright. She arrives hoping to see Penny Lane, but instead meets up with Stan the Man, manager of the Double Boogie band. She is invited to live with them in a house that is a constant party. She loves it, but a week later Stan hooks up with someone new. She meets Ruby again and Ruby takes her in. That first night Chiron saw an eye symbol by Ruby’s shop, decided to hang around there and Ruby let him sleep on the couch. He’s not sure that Starbright is the Axis, but there is a high probability.
Without being preachy major themes in the book include the environment, population control, women’s rights, and addiction. These were put into the setting of real life 1967. Street names referenced in the book exist and the Grateful Dead did have a concert there on August 22. I enjoyed the story without any nostalgic feeling, other than references to old Star Trek episodes and other SF works.

This novel is loads of fun to read. The majority of the characters are hippies from the 1960s who meet a stranger from the future who’s looking to save his world. This fellow, Chiron, needs to find a troubled adolescent teen named Susan (a.k.a. Starbright) for a very compelling reason. The book has a great deal to offer: swift action, lovable characters, spiritual insight, and well-chosen primary documents such as essays, poems, and news articles which round out the reader’s understanding of the worldview of the novel.
I think Summer of Love has excellent potential for a wider audience. I hope it continues to enjoy a healthy amount of sales in the used books market on this site. I wish even more for it to be in wider circulation. Some books talk about the sixties. This novel IS the sixties, thanks to the spirit and scholarship of its author. And, as one reader aptly put it, ‘the sci-fi stuff is just plain off the hook.’ Get a copy. Most people who have read it seem to respect it and enjoy it every bit as much as I do.”

Summer of Love, A Time Travel is a fine story. Lisa Mason takes three interesting characters, a time traveller from a future 500 years hence, a 14-year-old midwestern runaway flower child, and hip shopkeeper and places them all in the fascinating place and time that was San Francisco’s Summer of Love, 1967.
Mason has certainly done her homework. You can almost smell the pot and patchouli, see the painted faces and hear the sounds of Janis and the Grateful Dead as Chi, Starbright and Ruby fight to hold on to what really matters at a time when everything seems possible and even the smallest things can have huge consequences.
The time travel plot is nicely (if a bit predictably) done and the glimpses from Chi’s future world are fascinating, frightening and ultimately hopeful. Starbright is 100 percent convincing as a confused, loyal, idealistic, moody teenager who really could hold the key to what is to come. And Ruby Maverick, the shopkeeper who reluctantly gives the two young strangers shelter and strength in a strange and wondrous time is strong and smart and the kind of friend you’d want holding your hand or watching your back when the trip starts going strange.
Summer of Love, A Time Travel is not a rose-colored look backwards. It’s is a kaleidoscopic look at a time of both darkness and light, of confusion and clarity. It’s scary and beautiful, a strange trip where maybe all you need is a little love and some flowers in your hair.

Monday is moon day, and we like to eat something round, like the moon, today. Husband Tom Robinson and I have long been students of symbols, use them often in his art and my art and writing. Burgers are round like the full moon, so it’s Burger Monday. Vegetarian spicy black bean burgers, that is.

I do eat fish and, every four months or so, turkey, but am otherwise vegetarian. Tom is completely vegetarian, though he does eat dairy and eggs so he isn’t vegan.

I highly recommend Morningstar Farm’s meat substitutes. We especially like the Spicy Black Bean Burgers, Vegetarian Sausage Patties, Vegetarian Sausage Links, and Vegetarian Bacon Strips. The Vegetarian Corn Dogs are good for a quick meal.

They’re “meaty” without trying to taste like meat. That is, the protein is solidly good, derived from soy protein, fat-free milk, and fat-free egg whites. They’re fortified with vitamin B-12, an essential nutrient you can only get from animal sources.

In another thread about another topic on Facebook, a friend remarked that she never understood meat substitutes. If you’ve decided not to eat meat, she asked, why eat some substitute that reminds of you meat?

As I stated, the MS products taste satisfyingly “meaty” without trying to be meat. I became a vegetarian when I went away to college at 18, left my mother’s meat-centric kitchen, and could choose my own food. I read Diet for a Small Planet, which was first published in (I think) 1971. In those days, Morningstar Farms wasn’t even around and, for protein, I was over-reliant on dairy, to which I have a slight allergy. So I’m really grateful for the MS products.

But I wanted to address the rest of the question.

Please note I’m not trying to preach to you or convert you. People especially resent lectures on diet. Go ahead and eat whatever you want. I’ve got a roundtable on my website discussing nutrition at Keep Fit, Keep Writing: A Roundtable with Kevin J. Anderson, Lisa Mason, and Linda Nagata (Part 2: Chow Down!) http://www.lisamason.com/fitnessblog2.html But I wanted to explicate my position on this issue.

Nutrition: MS meat subs generally have a third of the calories of the equivalent meat serving. Also, they have 70% less overall fat, just a trace of saturated fat (the rest is mono or poly) and zero cholesterol. That’s important to me.

Fiber: The MS meat subs have great fiber. Meat has none.

Protein: The MS meat subs have great protein. As Diet for a Small Planet points out, meat has less usable protein than people think. Using complementary combinations of plant foods, you can achieve usable protein equal to meat.

Ethics: I’m at peace with the fact that no cow (or pig or lamb or chicken) had to die for us to be nourished tonight. I’m not at peace with the butchering of animals.

Green: The raising and slaughtering of animals for human food is one of the most polluting businesses on the planet. Huge portions of the South American rainforest have been destroyed to raise cattle for the fast-food franchise beef burgers. If you want to be green (or more green), stop eating meat. Or cut way down.

Personal History: My father was addicted to beef. He also ate pork, lamb, veal, bacon, chicken and the like, but beef was his first choice virtually every day. He was a little pudgy around the middle, but by no means obese or even really fat. He still had color in his hair, hardly any gray. He was looking into joining a computer start-up in San Diego; he was a math genius and fascinated with computers. Since I’d become a vegetarian at 18, I begged him to cut down the beef, but he refused. The last I saw him, he and my mother had come to visit me in San Francisco. We went out to a traditional Japanese restaurant. Tom had a vegetarian dish, I had fish, my mother had chicken, and Dad had the only beef dish on the menu. It was my last dinner with him. He and Mom drove off to the airport to fly back to Cleveland. I never saw him again. He had his first and last cardiac arrest shortly after that. He was sixty, and the sunshine of my life. I was thirty. The autopsy indicated he had arteriosclerosis, a condition directly associated with too much consumption of saturated fat and cholesterol. He’d also been exhibiting clear symptoms of colon cancer, a condition directly associated with eating too much red meat.

The cop said they found Turner’s daughter, but she wasn’t at the Palo Alto PD, she was in Emergency at Stanford Medical. It was bad. Even over the phone, the cop couldn’t conceal the anguish in his voice. Real bad.

Turner told his driver to take the Rolls right up to the Emergency entrance. Three car-accident victims were also coming through, their twisted limbs spelling out some terrible omen.

There had been other hospitals, other calls from Emergency, and Turner had come for her. From the boardroom, making hasty exits from important meetings, he had always come. Anger and displeasure with her had long ago replaced most of the worry. He thought of himself, self-righteously, as fulfilling his fatherly duties at moments like these. He wondered what crazy prank she’d pulled this time.

But nothing could have prepared Turner for what had happened to Angela.

The crisp, mottled thing with no fingers or toes or recognizable face lay packed in ice water beneath a plastic tent. A web of tubes was somehow keeping the alien-looking body alive.

If alive made any sense.

Jeanine, recovering from her faint in the lobby, began a hysterical chant, “How could she do this? How could she do this?”

Turner told her to shut up. Ever the obedient wife, she did.

“Well?” Turner confronted an ashen doctor.

Angela had suffered second- and third-degree burns on more than ninety percent of her body. The cops had found her in some East Palo Alto shooting gallery. The bedroom had gone up like a torch. She and her hoodlum boyfriend had been cooking up a methysynthetic known on the street as blue moon.

The boyfriend hadn’t made it.

Turner assembled these facts in an orderly fashion and filed them neatly in his mind under an incomprehensible heading called Angela. He bent over the tent. Fury filled him.

“Angela,” he said. “You dumb little bitch. I could kill you for this.”

“Mr. Turner,” the ashen doctor said. “She’s not expected to live through the night.”

He didn’t want to in front of all those strangers, but Turner began to cry.

So there you have it, my friends. “Tomorrow’s Child” was a short story for a glossy magazine acquired by an editor who preferred tight writing that would fit among all the advertisements. Enjoy! A thirty-day blog, “The Story Behind The Story That Sold To The Movies,” is included in the ebook.

Great Expectations

Pasadena is a wood-burning oven, Josh a piece of meat, as he pulls his Volvo spattered with bumper stickers up to Happy Daze Family Clinic.

Nikki hops out and boogies over to the driver’s side, doing the trademarked bump-and-grind she used to do as the lead guitar of Chicks in Chains. Today she’s flower-child chic in skinny white jeans, a pink camisole, and suede ballet flats. Not rocker-chick sleek in black leather and sky-high boots like in the old days. But he can’t help but smile. Damn, she’s hot. He hasn’t seen his wife this stoked since they got married four years ago.

Now if only he could stifle the regret in his heart.

She leans in his window. “She’s gonna be your kid, too, babe.”

“Or he. She could be a he.”

“Absolutely.”

“I hope I haven’t let you down, Nikki. You know I’m crazy in love with you.”

“I know, hubby of mine.” She kisses him sweetly on the lips, gazes deeply into his eyes. Then bumps-and-grinds around the Volvo, waves bye-bye, and dances through the front door of Happy Daze.

Josh sighs, watching her go. He wants this because she wants this. But that doesn’t mean he has to like what she wants. He’s pretty sure he’d be perfectly happy living the rest of his life, just him and Nikki.

He pulls out into frantic traffic, scanning the curbs for a parking space. Three grand for a freakin’ turkey baster, he mutters to himself, and the clinic hasn’t even got a parking lot.

Nikki takes a form on a clipboard from the receptionist, plops down in the plastic seat next to a lacy girly-girl studiously filling out her own form. Fingers fumbling, Nikki promptly drops the pen.

The girl, in a flouncy peach dress and prim two-inch heels, picks up the pen and hands it to her.

“Hey, thanks. I’m kinda nervous, you know?” Nikki is jumping for joy Josh has agreed to her plan, sure, but she’s also jittery as hell. “Making a baby with a stranger and all?”

“Me, too. But excited. Really, really excited.”

“Yeah. But my guy, he’s a bit downhearted we couldn’t make a baby on our own. He couldn’t.” She laughs ruefully. “Not for lack of trying.”

“Oh, my husband got over that when he saw his test results. What must be, must be.” She holds out her hand. “I’m Gretchen.”

Nikki expects a limp little handshake, receives a hearty knuckle-gripper. “Nikki. What a place to meet, huh?”

“It’s a perfectly respectable place to meet.” Gretchen smiles, as radiant as a madonna in a Renaissance painting. “Bad things happen to good folks, that’s what my Mike says. You carry on, is all.”

“It’s great we’ve got alternatives. Modern science, right?”

“Oh yes, thank the good Lord! Mike’s really, really excited, too. He comes from this big, huge family. We’re chompin’ at the bit to start a family of our own.”

Nikki fiddles with the pen. “Yeah, us, too. How cool is that?”

Josh cruises down Allen Avenue past Pasadena City College, hangs a right on Del Mar. Curses on this traffic! He sits in a fume-spewing gridlock for a solid ten minutes, which gives him way too much time to think things over.

Maybe Nikki had always been too skinny. She had been one of those girls who lived on black coffee, cigarettes, diet pills, and air-popped popcorn. That’s how she fit in her scary-skinny black leather. He read somewhere that a lot of times anorexics can’t conceive later in life.

But, wait. There he goes again, blaming her. He knows very well the tests showed the problem was his low sperm count. They had tried in vitro. It hadn’t helped.

Suddenly an Acura lurches out of a parking space. Josh squeals up, shifts into reverse, and starts backing in, slow and methodical. That’s how come there’s not a scratch or a dent on the geriatric Volvo he’s driven all over L.A.

Now a Ford pickup truck with an American flag flapping on the radio antenna swerves over and muscles into the space.

Damn! Josh yanks the parking brake, storms out of the Volvo, confronts the driver as he climbs down from the cab.

“Hey! That’s my parking space, man.”

The driver grins, a beefy jock in a security guard’s uniform. “I don’t see your name on it, moron.”

“I can’t believe this! My wife is getting knocked up by a turkey baster, and I can’t find a freakin’ parking space.”

“Some guys have all the luck.”

The jock strides away, cutting across the campus, northbound. What a jerk, Josh fumes. That’s the only way he’ll ever set foot on a college campus.

Nikki and Gretchen hand in their forms and their clipboards to the receptionist, a drill sergeant of a lady in a navy-blue linen pantsuit who orders them to take their seats till their time is called.

Wow. Wow. Nikki feels that thrill of destiny like when she first met Josh in the check-out line at Trader Joe’s. Or when she first stood onstage at the House of Blues. She smiles, a little guilty, to herself. Which had been the bigger thrill? That’s a tough call.

“I guess it’s the silver lining,” she says. “In the cloud, you know? I always wanted my kid to have some musical chops like me. A double whammy of Mozart genes can’t hurt, so we asked for a donor with some proven do-re-mi talent.”

“So did we!” Gretchen says. “When I was a kid, I trained at classical piano. I’d love for my child to play, too.”

Classical piano?

“Wow,” Nikki says, impressed. “I just used to play lead guitar for Chicks in Chains.”

“Oh, I loved Chicks in Chains!”

“Really? Got a fave tune?”

“‘Kiss My Ass,’ what else?”

“Well, all right!”

Nikki and Gretchen bump fists, their wedding rings clinking.

Nikki sighs. “Those were the days. Now I sell life insurance. At least it’s a living.”

Josh jogs up to the front door of Happy Daze just as the beefy jock is about to push inside.

The jock holds the door open for him. “Ladies, first.”

Josh barges in. “Brains before shit-for-brains.”

Nikki leaps to her feet at the sight of her Josh, so cuddly in his T and jeans, his hair a frizzy ‘fro in the Pasadena heat. She smooches his fuzzy cheek.

“Hey, babe. Everything cool?”

Gretchen leaps to her feet, too, and flings her arms around a macho dude in some kind uniform with a holster and everything. “Valiant Security Service” reads the logo stitched across his broad shoulders.

“Mike! Darling! This is my friend Nikki. You won’t believe it! She used to play with Chicks in Chains and she and her husband asked for a donor with musical talent just like we did, and she’s here to make a baby, just like me!”

Nikki’s not sure why her guy and this other guy are glaring and snarling at each other like junkyard dogs.

“Um, babe? This is my new friend Gretchen and uh . . . you’re who?”

“Mr. Mike Williams, to you,” the macho dude says.

“Mikey and me,” Josh says, “we’ve met.”

The cop said they found Turner’s daughter, but she wasn’t at the Palo Alto PD, she was in Emergency at Stanford Medical. It was bad. Even over the phone, the cop couldn’t conceal the anguish in his voice. Real bad.

Turner told his driver to take the Rolls right up to the Emergency entrance. Three car-accident victims were also coming through, their twisted limbs spelling out some terrible omen.

There had been other hospitals, other calls from Emergency, and Turner had come for her. From the boardroom, making hasty exits from important meetings, he had always come. Anger and displeasure with her had long ago replaced most of the worry. He thought of himself, self-righteously, as fulfilling his fatherly duties at moments like these. He wondered what crazy prank she’d pulled this time.

But nothing could have prepared Turner for what had happened to Angela.

The crisp, mottled thing with no fingers or toes or recognizable face lay packed in ice water beneath a plastic tent. A web of tubes was somehow keeping the alien-looking body alive.

If alive made any sense.

Jeanine, recovering from her faint in the lobby, began a hysterical chant, “How could she do this? How could she do this?”

Turner told her to shut up. Ever the obedient wife, she did.

“Well?” Turner confronted an ashen doctor.

Angela had suffered second- and third-degree burns on more than ninety percent of her body. The cops had found her in some East Palo Alto shooting gallery. The bedroom had gone up like a torch. She and her hoodlum boyfriend had been cooking up a methysynthetic known on the street as blue moon.

The boyfriend hadn’t made it.

Turner assembled these facts in an orderly fashion and filed them neatly in his mind under an incomprehensible heading called Angela. He bent over the tent. Fury filled him.

“Angela,” he said. “You dumb little bitch. I could kill you for this.”

“Mr. Turner,” the ashen doctor said. “She’s not expected to live through the night.”

He didn’t want to in front of all those strangers, but Turner began to cry.
