4.20.18.FANDSF.MAY.2018

My contributor’s two copies came in the mail on Wednesday. I spent yesterday looking over the magazine, reading several stories. The magazine will be on the newsstands as of May 1, but you subscribers may already be receiving your copy.

Here’s a more informative Introduction to my story, “The Bicycle Whisperer”:

After Lisa Mason encountered a homeless teenager begging for money in the parking lot of her Piedmont grocery store, a character stepped out of her imagination and demanded that Mason write about her. The Lone Rangerette, her sentient bicycle, and her mobile AI may get her own YA novel in the future. Mason’s five-star novella, One Day in the Life of Alexa, was published in 2017 by Bast Books in print and an ebook. Visit her at www.lisamason.com for all her books, ebooks, stories, screenplays, interviews, blogs, cute cat pictures, and bespoke art and jewelry by her acclaimed artist husband, Tom Robinson.

12.27.17.JAN.FEB.FANDSF

I know, there are four days left in 2017 and the last issue is still on the newsstands. But I’m hitting the ground running for 2018! Here’s the first review of “Aurelia” in the January-February 2018 Issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

First, here are the contents:
“Jewel of The Heart” by Matthew Hughes
“Widdam” by Vandana Singh
“Galatea in Utopia” by Nick Wolven
“The Donner Party” by Dale Bailey
“Aurelia” by Lisa Mason
“Neanderthals” by Gardner Dozois
“A List of Forty-Nine Lies” by Steven Fisher
“An Equation of State” by Robert Reed
“The Equationist” by J. D. Moyer
“A Feather in Her Cap” by Mary Robinette Kowal

And here’s the review:
“Rot. Molding leaves and fungus. The smell of soil. And a thoroughly despicable lawyer. Lisa Mason‘s “Aurelia” is a tour de force, an assault on the senses wrapped around a mystery, a tale of friendship and copious amounts of unscrupulous sex and a main character one loves to hate. And yet, Mason manages to make him engaging.
Aurelia” sticks to its theme in a skillfully executed and very entertaining manner. The writing itself feels like a cross between thoroughly modern dark fantasy, and classics like Poe and Lovecraft, dragging you forward, almost against your own will. If you like dark fantasy, mysteries and gorgeous prose, “Aurelia” is for you.” https://www.tangentonline.com/print–bi-monthly-reviewsmenu-260/221-fantasy-a-science-fiction/3705-fantasy-a-science-fiction-januaryfebruary-2018

So there you have it, my friends. I’ve had my share of hard knocks in my writing career since I sold my first story to OMNI magazine in 1985. So I’ve got to say it—I like being compared to Poe and Lovecraft! And having gorgeous prose! What a way to start the New Year!

10.26.17.FSF.SEPT.OCT.2017.CVR

This just came in today from the website, sfcrowsnest:

“Lisa Mason’s ‘Riddle’ is a short fantasy story about a struggling San Francisco artist who is dumped by his ambitious lawyer girl-friend. He goes out, gets drunk, fails to score with the bar’s new waitress and staggers home, only to find a half-naked woman hiding behind the bins outside his apartment. He lives in a crummy end of town, so doesn’t want to leave her outside. However, he’s also suspicious of being robbed by a stranger. Common humanity eventually triumphs and he lets her in for the night, only to find out that she’s a lot stranger than he could possibly have imagined. This is a well-executed supernatural story which brings a fascinating mythical being into a contemporary context and has a lot of fun with what happens next. The main characters are convincingly portrayed and the plot plays out remorselessly to a dramatic conclusion.” http://sfcrowsnest.info/the-magazine-of-fantasy-science-fiction-sept-oct-2017-volume-133-733-magazine-review/

Here are the rest of the reviews of “Riddle,” which was published in the September-October 2017 68th Anniversary issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

Rich Horton’s column in Locus Magazine:
There’s plenty more good stuff this issue. Lisa Mason’s ‘‘Riddle’’ is a slickly executed horror story about a declining painter whose girlfriend has left him, and who meets another woman – or is she a woman? The title hints at what she really is – and what she really does is pretty scary. (Don’t have the link, this may be only in print.)

From Goodreads:
“Riddle” by Lisa Mason
: a charged story about a down-and-out artist who meets an unusual female who speaks in riddles. Physical and emotional mayhem ensues. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36123438-the-magazine-of-fantasy-science-fiction-september-october-2017

And another review From Goodreads:
In all honestly, most of these had intriguing concepts and all of them were very well-written, but there were only a few that I would actually say I enjoyed. Just because of my personal tastes. Those being Lisa Mason’s “Riddle” and Michael Swanwick’s “Starlight Express”. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36123438-the-magazine-of-fantasy-science-fiction-september-october-2017

From Amazing Stories Online:

Lisa Mason’s “Riddle” is set in a city we both love, San Francisco. (If you have been paying attention, you’ll remember that her book Summer of Love has a special resonance for me, because I spent that particular Summer in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco.) This story takes place in North Beach, where in the ‘60s, Carol Doda (a 44DD, thanks to implants!) danced topless at the Condor Club. (If you remember the movie Dirty Harry, North Beach is near where the church was.) Edwin Stone is an artist; his girlfriend Nikki has left him. She did so partly because of his lack of ambition, because he was content to just get by with his talent—but there are always multiple reasons for breakups—but Stone has decided his best friend is the boilermaker. (I had my first boilermakers in San Francisco, which residents call The City; never “Frisco.”) One night, completely drunk, Edwin rescues a vagrant sphinx. Part woman, part lion, all riddle. If you remember what happens to those who can’t answer The Riddle of the Sphinx, you might guess this story’s end. (Or not.) Nicely written! http://www.amazingstoriesmag.com/2017/10/review-fsf-sept-oct-2017/

From sfrevu:
“Riddle” by Lisa Mason
-+- Edwin Stone is a down-down-on-his-luck artist whose girlfriend has left him. Drunk, he takes home a very different woman, a sphinx, part cat, part woman. She asks him riddles, he answers, they have passionate sex. But she does something else, too. Unsettling little horror tale. http://www.sfrevu.com/php/Review-id.php?id=17551

From Tangent Online
“Riddle” by Lisa Mason
Edwin is an artist who has broken up with a woman and is trying to hook up with a waitress but fails. Then he meets a strange something in the alley on his way home which turns out to be a sphinx. Lots of riddles and weird sex and horrific things follow.
Some may see this as a tale of one screwed-up clueless nutcase. Others may see it as a defense of women who want to “fix up” their projects of boyfriends. Some may see this as a really powerful embedding of ideas in imagination.  . . . [P]oints for a memorable sphinx and a vividly nightmarish quality. http://www.tangentonline.com/print–bi-monthly-reviewsmenu-260/221-fantasy-a-science-fiction/3569-fantasy-a-science-fiction-septemberoctober-2017

F&SF-9-17-small

Editor C.c. Finlay hits it out of the park with this, the 68th Anniversary issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Two Grand Masters, multiple award-winning and award-nominated authors, and striking new voices. A sexy, heady, and thought-provoking mix of alternate realities, empire-conquering, universe-traveling, and edgy consciousness. You can buy this issue and/or order a full subscription at The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

In 2015, I published two well-received stories in F&SF, “Teardrop” in the May-June 2015 issue and “Tomorrow is a Lovely Day” in the November-December 2015 issue. These were both chosen by Gordon Van Gelder, the Hugo Award-winning American science fiction editor. “Anything For You” was published in the September-October 2016 Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. That story was chosen by presiding editor C.C. Finlay, as was “Riddle.” Another dark modern fantasy, “Aurelia,” will appear in early 2018.

I’ve sold previously to F&SF when yet another editor was helming the magazine. One story, “Destination,” appears in my five-star-rated collection of previously published short fiction,  Strange Ladies: 7 Stories.

I’m so honored and excited to publish again in one of the most highly respected science fiction and fantasy magazines continuously in publication since 1949.

Wow! Look what came in the mail today! The September-October Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction with my story, “Anything For You.” You can order the magazine at The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

In 2015, I published two well-received stories in F&SF, “Teardrop” in the May-June 2015 issue and “Tomorrow is a Lovely Day” in the November-December 2015 issue. These were both chosen by Gordon Van Gelder, Hugo Award-winning American science fiction editor.

The new story was chosen by C.C. Finlay. Thanks for the great introduction, Charlie!

I’ve sold previously to F&SF when yet another editor, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, was helming the magazine. One story, “Destination,” appears in my five-star rated collection Strange Ladies: 7 Stories.

I’m so honored and excited to publish again in one of the most highly respected science fiction and fantasy magazines continuously in publication since 1949.

The Story Collection Storybundle
Curated by Lisa Mason

I love short stories. There’s nothing like a good story to satisfy your fiction fix in the course of a busy day, a tiny universe savored over a lunch hour, on a train commute, with a glass of wine at the end of the day.

Because of its compression, its fewer moving parts, a story may be more highly crafted than a novel. A famous story may represent an author’s style and vision more succinctly than any one of his or her books. Think of “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” by Ernest Hemingway, “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, “The Pit and the Pendulum” by Edgar Allen Poe. Or how about “What I Didn’t See” by Karen Joy Fowler, “The War At Home” by Lewis Shiner, “Love and Sex Among the Invertebrates” by Pat Murphy . . .

But wait a minute! We’ve got those last three stories in the Story Collection Storybundle. And we’ve got more than stories, we’ve got multi-award-winning and award-nominated story collections.

The authors have assembled their short fiction written over a decade—sometimes over two or three decades—of their careers. Stories published in wide-ranging and diverse magazines and anthologies, many which may be difficult to find now, some of which may have gone out of print. The authors have done the hard work of gathering up these amazing stories and all you, the reader, need to do is enjoy!

But never mind the authors’ accolades and accomplishments. The collections are a feast for the mind—amazing, far-ranging, tragic, disturbing, thought-provoking, witty, and—dare I say it?—just a damn good read.

Oh, the places you’ll go! Trek to Africa in search of gorillas in Karen Joy Fowler’s “What I Didn’t See.” Journey to Paris in search of an antique spool of recording wire in Lewis Shiner’s “Perfidia.” Explore the mysteries of a little boy’s life in Walter Jon Williams’ “Daddy’s World.” Search for the Folding Man in Elizabeth Hand’s “Errantry.” Embark on a cross-country car trip with three mysterious strangers in Lisa Mason’s “Destination.” Defy conventional society in Pat Murphy’s “A Flock of Lawn Flamingos.” Learn the dark powers of a voodoo doll in Kathe Koja’s “Baby.” Search for resources on asteroids in C.C. Finlay’s “The Frontier Archipelago.”

As always at Storybundle.com, you the reader name your price—whatever you feel the books are worth. You may designate a portion of the proceeds to go to a charity. For the Story Collection Storybundle, that’s Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (“SFWA”). SFWA champions writers’ rights, sponsors the Nebula Award for excellence in fantasy and science fiction, and promotes numerous literacy groups.

The basic bundle (minimum $5 to purchase, more if you feel the books are worth more) includes:

Wild Things Cover Final

Wild Things by C. C. Finlay

I first met Charlie (virtually) when he became the editor of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in January, 2015. When I began choosing titles for The Story Collection Storybundle, I wondered if this short story expert had a collection of his own. No surprise—of course he does! And we’re in luck because Charlie specially prepared the ebook of his fine hardcover collection, Wild Things, for Storybundle. Fasten your seatbelt—you’re about to travel from a high fantasy King Arthur tale, to mining asteroids in deep space, to the American Revolutionary War, and much more in The Story Collection Storybundle.
–Lisa Mason

C.C. Finlay is the author of half a dozen books and dozens of stories. His stories have been republished in numerous Year’s Best reprints, nominated for the Hugo, Nebula, Sturgeon, and other awards, and translated into sixteen languages. He’s the ninth editor of the eminent Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Finlay has also taught at Clarion, Clarion YA, Alpha Writers, and Odyssey Online Writing Classes. He’s the resident editor for the Online Writing Workshops.

Here’s what the critics have to say about C. C. Finlay’s Wild Things:

“[T]hese stories show Finlay exploring a variety of genres, bringing freshness and intelligence to them all… an absorbing and often surprising collection.” – Booklist

“Finlay shows himself to be a versatile writer of imaginative fiction in his first story collection… these 14 tales display an insightful knowledge of human nature.” –Publishers Weekly

“Finlay displays an astonishing range, an active imagination and a developing assurance and control: a writer to watch.” – Kirkus

“Finlay’s stories will endure.” – Ideomancer

Visit Charlie at ccfinlay.com and on Twitter at @ccfinlay. He’s on Facebook, too.
