I appreciate the challenge for an author to depict, and depict deeply, an “anti-hero.” In Acts of Conscience, this anti-hero is a way politically incorrect dude.

But William Barton pulls it off beautifully and his tale of an orbital mechanic, a guy who fortuitously scores a spaceship and takes off for the stars, is a dark journey of the soul as much as a space odyssey. I’m excited to include another genre-expanding title in the Philip K. Dick Award Bundle. –Lisa Mason

I first became acquainted with Gwyneth Jones via her incisive and award-winning criticism of science fiction. What a treat to discover her own incisive and award-winning science fiction.

Life is a tale of feminism and courage that asks difficult questions about women and society and a splendid example of what science fiction may achieve beyond conventional genre tropes. I’m pleased to include Life in the Philip K. Dick Award Bundle. –Lisa Mason

I met Elizabeth Hand at the San Francisco Worldcon when our mutual publisher drove a bus filled with its authors up to George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch for the evening. What a memorable evening it was!

I’d also use “memorable” to describe any of Liz’s stories and books. She’s internationally renowned for her lush literary style and cutting-edge ideas. Prepare to be dazzled by Aestival Tide, a wonderful addition to the Philip K. Dick Award Bundle. –Lisa Mason

As a 2016 Philip K Dick Award judge, I had access to the master list of Finalists and Winners going back to 1983, when the award was inaugurated.

When Storybundle agreed  to do a Philip K Dick Award Storybundle comprised of past Finalists and Winners, I researched the authors on that list.

I chose these authors because they meet the following criteria:

  1. They’re not dead (that’s a joke);
  2. They have an ebook of their Philip K Dick Award Finalist or Winner;
  3. They and their publishers were technically able (in a publishing sense) to participate in StoryBundle’s DRM-free environment.

You would be surprised how many authors going back to 1983 couldn’t meet those simple criteria, including the first.

I’m delighted and thankful for this list. I’ve read all of the authors’ works, often first their magazine stories and then their books, and met several of the authors at conventions and parties. This is a valuable addition to my elibrary, as I know it will be to yours.

I truly encourage you to enjoy these wonderful books as much as I do.

A writer-acquaintance who was acting as the Curator of a Storybundle earlier this year invited me to participate in his bundle.

I gladly did. I had heard about Storybundle.com and all the good things the website does for readers and authors alike but I didn’t know how to get involved. Now I did. You have to be invited by a curator.

I love the Storybundle website, how they’ve set things up and their commitment to all things writing. Storybundle is a major player in the new independent publishing revolution and works well with readers’ passion for ebooks.

After the first bundle was done, and performed well, I began communicating with Storybundle, letting them know that I’m publishing two stories in the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction this year and serving as a judge for the 2016 The Philip K Dick Award.

Storybundle, ever alert for new bundle opportunities, was curious about my role as a judge. We’re slowly working out the details of how I may curate a 2016 Philip K Dick Award Storybundle next year. There are numerous logistical publishing hurdles to overcome. I frankly don’t know if that bundle will be feasible.

In the meantime, as a PKD Award judge, I acquired the master list of Finalists and Winners going back to 1983, when the award was inaugurated. I became excited that a great high concept for a bundle would be a Philip K Dick Award Storybundle comprised of PKD Finalists and Winners. Even better, I was familiar with most of the authors on the master list. I’d read their stories and books before I got published myself and looked up to them. They are big names to me.

Storybundle said yes! There were logistical publishing hurdles to overcome with this bundle, too, and I’ve worked very hard as a Curator to make The Philip K Dick Award Storybundle a reality.

And what a reality it is! Over 3,000 readers in the first eleven days, with eleven days to go.

So there you have it, my friends! The Philip K Dick Award Storybundle includes Aestival Tide by Elizabeth Hand (PKD Finalist), Life by Gwyneth Jones (PKD Winner), The Cipher by Kathe Koja (PKD Finalist), Points of Departure by Pat Murphy (PKD Winner), Dark Seeker by K.
