Strange Ladies Cover Final

As I mulled over my published short fiction, I found seven wildly different stories with one thing in common–a heroine totally unlike me. I’m the girl next door. I have no idea where these strange ladies came from.

In The Oniomancer (Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine), a Chinese-American punk bicycle messenger finds an artifact on the street. In Guardian (Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine), an African-American gallerist resorts to voodoo to confront a criminal. In Felicitas (Desire Burn: Women Writing from the Dark Side of Passion [Carroll and Graf]), an illegal Mexican immigrant faces life as a cat shapeshifter. In Stripper (Unique Magazine), an exotic dancer battles the Mob. In Triad (Universe 2 [Bantam]), Dana Anad lives half the time as a woman, half as a man, and falls in love with a very strange lady. In Destination (Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction), a driver takes three strangers from a ride board on a cross-country trip as the radio reports that a serial killer is on the loose. In Transformation and the Postmodern Identity Crisis (Fantastic Alice [Ace]), Alice considers life after Wonderland.

Five stars on Facebook and Amazon! “Great work, Lisa Mason!”

I’ve got two more recent reviews of my story, “Riddle,” which was published in the September-October 2017 68th Anniversary issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. And then we’re off to the next issue!

First, Rich Horton’s column in Locus Magazine:
There’s plenty more good stuff this issue. Lisa Mason’s ‘‘Riddle’’ is a slickly executed horror story about a declining painter whose girlfriend has left him, and who meets another woman – or is she a woman? The title hints at what she really is – and what she really does is pretty scary. (Don’t have the link, this may be only in print.)

And another review from Goodreads:
“Riddle” by Lisa Mason
: a charged story about a down-and-out artist who meets an unusual female who speaks in riddles. Physical and emotional mayhem ensues. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36123438-the-magazine-of-fantasy-science-fiction-september-october-2017

Here are the rest I’ve been able to find:

From Goodreads:
In all honestly, most of these had intriguing concepts and all of them were very well-written, but there were only a few that I would actually say I enjoyed. Just because of my personal tastes. Those being Lisa Mason’s “Riddle” and Michael Swanwick’s “Starlight Express”. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36123438-the-magazine-of-fantasy-science-fiction-september-october-2017

From Amazing Stories Online:

Lisa Mason’s “Riddle” is set in a city we both love, San Francisco. (If you have been paying attention, you’ll remember that her book Summer of Love has a special resonance for me, because I spent that particular Summer in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco.) This story takes place in North Beach, where in the ‘60s, Carol Doda (a 44DD, thanks to implants!) danced topless at the Condor Club. (If you remember the movie Dirty Harry, North Beach is near where the church was.) Edwin Stone is an artist; his girlfriend Nikki has left him. She did so partly because of his lack of ambition, because he was content to just get by with his talent—but there are always multiple reasons for breakups—but Stone has decided his best friend is the boilermaker. (I had my first boilermakers in San Francisco, which residents call The City; never “Frisco.”) One night, completely drunk, Edwin rescues a vagrant sphinx. Part woman, part lion, all riddle. If you remember what happens to those who can’t answer The Riddle of the Sphinx, you might guess this story’s end. (Or not.) Nicely written! http://www.amazingstoriesmag.com/2017/10/review-fsf-sept-oct-2017/

From sfrevu:
“Riddle” by Lisa Mason
-+- Edwin Stone is a down-down-on-his-luck artist whose girlfriend has left him. Drunk, he takes home a very different woman, a sphinx, part cat, part woman. She asks him riddles, he answers, they have passionate sex. But she does something else, too. Unsettling little horror tale. http://www.sfrevu.com/php/Review-id.php?id=17551

From Tangent Online
“Riddle” by Lisa Mason
Edwin is an artist who has broken up with a woman and is trying to hook up with a waitress but fails. Then he meets a strange something in the alley on his way home which turns out to be a sphinx. Lots of riddles and weird sex and horrific things follow.
Some may see this as a tale of one screwed-up clueless nutcase. Others may see it as a defense of women who want to “fix up” their projects of boyfriends. Some may see this as a really powerful embedding of ideas in imagination.  . . . [P]oints for a memorable sphinx and a vividly nightmarish quality. http://www.tangentonline.com/print–bi-monthly-reviewsmenu-260/221-fantasy-a-science-fiction/3569-fantasy-a-science-fiction-septemberoctober-2017

Breaking news!

I sold a story, “Anything For You,” to The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and I’m too happy to remain on vacation. (I’m not really on vacation, I’m wrapping things up as a judge for the 2016 Philip K Dick Award and the newly appointed chairwoman of the PKD jury, plus I’m working my butt off to finish some things in peace and quiet, but never mind. Define “vacation.”)

Anything For You” (at 3,600 words) will be my fourth story in F&SF—I’m honored and delighted to publish in this great magazine again—and my thirtieth published story.

My first F&SF story, “Destination,” was acquired by Kathyrn Kristine Rusch, “Teardrop” and “Tomorrow Is A Lovely Day” were Gordon Van Gelder picks, and “Anything For You” was given the nod by the terrific new editor, C.c. Finlay, himself a novelist, prolific storywriter, and husband to Rae Carson, a bestselling YA fantasy novelist.

This elevates 2015 from a “pretty good year” to an outstanding year! Happy happy New Year!

A revised version of “Destination” is published in Strange Ladies: 7 Stories. http://www.lisamason.com/strangeladies.html

F&SF is a traditional print magazine. Here’s the link to their site and their description. You will find all the information you need about how to order a subscription, order a single issue, submit your own story, and obtain ebook versions on Amazon.

https://www.sfsite.com/fsf/ The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, founded in 1949, is the award-winning SF magazine which is the original publisher of SF classics like Stephen King’s Dark Tower, Daniel Keyes’s Flowers for Algernon, and Walter M. Miller’s A Canticle for Leibowitz. Each double-sized bimonthly issue offers:
–compelling short fiction by writers such as Ray Bradbury, Ursula K. Le Guin, Terry Bisson and many others;
–the science fiction field’s most respected and outspoken opinions on Books, Films and Science;
–humor from our cartoonists and writers.

So there you have it, my friends. 2015 was an excellent year for me. In addition to this new sale, I published two stories in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, was granted and gave two interviews in F&SF. I participated as an author in the Time Travel Bundle at Storybundle.com, curated and participated as an author in the Philip K Dick Award Bundle, and am now curating the 2016 Story Collection Bundle, as well as participating as an author. Other projects are underway for 2016. And I’m serving as a judge for the 2016 Philip K Dick Award and was recently appointed as the chairwoman of the jury.

The biggest change on the home-front is that, after eight catless years since Alana died, Tom and I adopted a young girl cat, a blue-eyed Siamese-Angora mix, whom we named Athena. After being raised by a cat breeder, Athena is making leaps and bounds on a daily basis towards transforming herself into a loving, calm, smart, delightful family member. We’re so lucky to have found her!

Finally, 2016 ushers in, under Chinese astrology, the Year of the Monkey. Yep, he’s the Trickster. Expect surprises, nasty and otherwise. Beware, take care.

I want to wish you all now a Very Merry (and safe) Holiday Season and a Happy New Year! See you next year!
