When you load your book on Smashwords, the site’s confirmation message telling you your book was approved by the AutoVetter format program will give you two links.

One looks like this: http://smashwords.com/b/330289

The other link looks like this: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/330289

I have no idea why Smashwords generates two forms of links (Barnes and Noble did that, too, maybe two years ago. The B&N short link didn’t work either and we had to scramble around, updating the links for every title in my list).

The first Smashwords link is shorter so I was merrily posting away the short form on Twitter. With the 140 characters limit, brevity is the soul of a Tweet.

Then a kindly soul sent me a private message that my Smashwords links weren’t working. He’d had the same problem and felt duty-bound to tell me. Thank you, my friend!

Now, we all should click on our own links from time to time and make sure that they work. But I admit, with limited time and so much to do every day, I often don’t do that.

Sure enough, the short link DOES NOT WORK.

The long link DOES.

So there you have it, my friends. If you’ve got books on Smashwords, double-check your links. It’s time-consuming and a pain, but do correct them so potential readers can find your book on this valuable website.

Here’s my list with the corrected links:

I promised you this a month ago now. Sorry for the delay! My sweet little laptop got hack-attacked and obsoleted by AOL 9.7. Had to totally retool my office. Took a while to get up and running even after the equipment arrived.

Now, then.

Publishers and authors uploading your books on Smashwords and hoping to qualify for the Premium Catalog, heads up! When you qualify, your book ships to Apple’s iBookstore, Sony, Kobo, Diesel, and others, as well as the Smashwords site. So make sure you do!

First, you must study Smashwords’ Style Guide downloadable for free from their site. It is absolutely terrific (though the version I’ve got seems slightly out of date). The Guide is much too lengthy and detailed to summarize here. I urge you to get it and study it. You’ll be glad you did. We did so and sailed through “the Meatgrinder” with no problem.

After your book is approved by the Autovetter, the file goes to human vetters who eyeball the converted files. All of our books sailed through that scrutiny, as well, except two.

The human vetters reported that they found irregularities in the font, which is unacceptable. We tried all the usual fixes Smashwords recommends: globally replacing the file into “Normal Paragraph,” which wipes out the format. You have to go through the whole book and reformat special features such as centering and bolding chapter titles and so on. A real time-eater!

But that didn’t help. We tried globally replacing the font and resubmitted to the vetters. They reported that the problem persisted after both fixes, that some of the code must have been corrupted due to exposure to more than one computer.

The vetters suggested other remedies, which involved looking at HTML source code since the flaws weren’t visible on the face of our files.

Terrific. I’m a writer, not a software engineer. The prospect of editing HTML sent shivers down my spine. I simply don’t have the training to do it. And it was frustrating since all our other files, prepared on the same computer, had no problem.

There had to be a better way.

I’d been considering replacing the Arial font I use for everything with Times Roman 12-point. I’d chosen Arial because it’s clean and clear on the screen. But Times Roman is often the font used in print books, so I thought I’d give it a try.

When I globally replaced the font in those two troublesome books, lo and behold! The corrupted fonts popped right out! Globally replacing hadn’t helped because the corrupted fonts registered as the same font as everything else even though they were obviously different. Weird, huh?

It was globally replacing the font from Ariel to Times Roman that did the trick.

Eureka! We still had to hunt through the books and rekey in the corrupted passages in the correct font, but that was a small price to pay for a perfect book. That qualified handily for the Premium Catalog.

Where on earth did the odd font originate? Those books were scanned in from manuscript pages. My humble little scanner notoriously spits out strange results so that must be where the odd font came from. Thank you, OfficeJet!

So there you have it, my friends. Try changing the fons, especially to Times Roman, and see if that doesn’t reveal the problem.

I figured out how to fix a vexing format problem for Smashwords and qualified for the Premium Catalog, so the books will ship to the Apple iBookstore, Kobo, Sony, Diesel, and more!

I’ll tell you about it tomorrow.

Today, I’m having technical difficulties with AOL and Internet Explorer, so I’m nearly three hours behind in my work. (Sigh.)

The Internet is a lot like the little girl with a little curl right in the middle of her forehead. When she’s good, she’s very, very good. And when she’s bad, she’s horrid!

See you tomorrow!

Tesla is now on Nook, Kindle, Smashwords, and UK Kindle!

Genius. Visionary. Madman.

Nikola Tesla (1856–1943) was the pioneering genius who invented the AC electrical system that powers our world to this day, as well as radio, remote control, the automobile speedometer, X-ray photography, the AND logic gate that drives all our computer systems, and countless other devices and precursors to devices such as cell phones, television, and the Internet that we so effortlessly use today.

Strikingly handsome and charismatic, fluent in half a dozen languages, mathematics savant and master machinist, a reed-thin perfectionist who quoted poetry like a Victorian rapper, Tesla became one of the most famous men of his day. Friend of tycoons like John Jacob Astor and Stanford White and celebrities like Mark Twain and Sarah Bernhardt.

Yet Tesla was an intensely driven and lonely man, beset by inner demons, and cursed with a protean inventive imagination a century ahead of his time. He died in obscurity and poverty and, to this day, his name is not widely known. How did that happen?

Blending historical fact with speculative imagination, Lisa Mason explores the secrets of the Inventor’s inner life and his obsession with Goethe’s Faust set against the backdrop of sweeping technological changes at the turn of the twentieth century that have forever changed the world.

Tesla, A Worthy of His Time was read by the producer of “Aliens,” “The Abyss,” and “The Hulk.” A List of Sources follows the Screenplay.
