Last week, the city informed us that a construction crew would be working on the street outside our home to install a new sewer device to the existing pipes. (It’s an old street.) The crew would start banging and jack-hammering early in the morning.
That night, before I went to bed, I inserted my ear plugs. I have these soft foam ear plugs. You kind of squish them in your fingers, shove the narrowed point into your ear canal, and allow the foam to expand. Tom uses hard plastic ear plugs (very effective), which I can’t bring myself to insert in my ear.
I hate anything inserted in my ear, especially something hard like a hard plastic ear plug or, maybe some day, a hearing aid.
I’m of the age (over forty) when vendors of products that are supposed to appeal to, or be required by people who are getting on in years send all kinds of advertisements by snail mail or email. One of those products is hearing aids. I also see ads in Via, the magazine published by the AAA Auto Club, which I belong to, and Popular Science, which Tom gets at our library, and even Scientific American, which our neighbor gives us when he’s done reading. Do print magazines assume that their readership is comprised mostly of people who are getting on in years and might consider hearing aids? It would seem so.
Before Christmas of last year, I received one snail mail, a large fancy embossed envelope, which offered me a free Christmas ham if I would come into the conference room of a local hotel, get a free hearing test, and listen to a pitch for their hearing aids.
Aside from the fact that I don’t eat ham, I was not enticed by the prospect of a free hearing test. A test is an ordeal designed to prove you’re inadequate. When I was a child, I always hated hearing tests. You listened to a soft tone and told the tester whether you could hear it. Or not.
Today, my hearing isn’t worse than two or three decades ago. My hearing is just as bad as it always was.
When I was a child, I suffered recurring severe earaches. I have a vivid memory of lying in bed and reaching my forefinger in my ear, finding the canal crusty with the medicinal drops my mother was administering to me. The memory makes me shudder.
When I was a child, I also hated—HATED—milk, butter, cheese, anything dairy. The conventional wisdom was—and it still probably is—that children need to drink milk to build strong bones and teeth. That was the health gospel.
My mother strived mightily to get me to drink milk, flavoring the loathsome greasy liquid with chocolate powder or strawberry powder, pouring it in my cereal, cooking with it. As soon as I was old enough to sneak downstairs to the kitchen before my parents woke up, I rinsed my cereal bowl in milk, deposited a few flakes of cereal in there, and placed the bowl in the sink. Same for my milk glass. My mother was annoyed that I didn’t wash my breakfast dishes, but it was a ploy on my part. A fake-out.
Decades later, I discovered from a book called Mad Cowboy about the cattle-raising industry, that earaches (among other ailments) in young children are a symptom of dairy intolerance.
Today we know that various vegetables, beans, fish, whole grains, and calcium-fortified juices provide more than enough calcium to build strong bones in children and adults without dairy.
When I became a vegetarian in college, I developed a taste for cheese and yogurt. That was before there were the wonderful vegetarian meat- substitutes, like Morningstar Farms products, that we have today. Before I learned to cook vegetables and vegetarian dishes. Cheese, yogurt, and soybeans were all we vegetarians had for protein and calcium. But I never drank milk, not even fat-free milk.
And my hearing? From my twenties on, I’ve always found it difficult to sit across the table from a companion in a café or restaurant and hear what he or she is saying, especially when there’s background noise. In rooms with high ceilings, like cafés and restaurants, grocery stores, and offices, I have to ask, “Say that again?” I have trouble understanding people with heavy accents, any kind of accent. It’s embarrassing. I know I get a blank look on my face and the speaker thinks I’m dense.
Sometimes I have to listen carefully to the dialog in movies, especially when the movie has too-loud background music or noise. But in the quiet of our living room, I have no trouble hearing my husband when we have a conversation. And I have no trouble hearing Athena when she meows, asking me for something to eat.
So if you meet me in a restaurant, café, convention, or party, don’t be shy. Lean close and shout in my ear.
The noise in the street last week from the city construction crew wasn’t bad at all. Or maybe my foam ear plugs worked better than I’d hoped. The crew did a great job of installing a high-tech grate that they can remove for maintenance. Hooray for the city.

Yes, it’s that time of year again. But before I dash off into 2018 to work off the holiday cheer, here is a recap of 2017. A good year, but not a great one. A major new project seems to be stalled, another new project seems to be heating up. Not sure what to make of any of that.
Four stories sold: “Riddle” to The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. “Dangerous” to the anthology Welcome to Dystopia. “Aurelia” also to F&SF, and “The Bicycle Whisperer” again to F&SF.
Two stories published: “Riddle” in the September-October 2017 68th Anniversary of F&SF and “Dangerous” in Welcome to Dystopia. “Aurelia” appears now in the January-February 2018 F&SF and “The Bicycle Whisperer” will appear sometime later.
An interview with F&SF for “Riddle” was published on the website and an interview for “Aurelia” is forthcoming.

I curated the Artificial Intelligence Storybundle and included my two early cyberpunks, Arachne and Cyberweb. I participated in—but did not curate—the SFWA Fantasy Storybundle and included my urban fantasy, The Garden of Abracadabra.
I wrote a story, one fantasy level up, about my experience of adopting Athena called “Crazy Chimera Lady”. One editor actually scolded me for having a Happily Ever After ending. I was so vexed, I published a blog about why I wrote the story and gave the story away for the holidays.

In the office, the clock battery got replaced in the Dell Tower and the Tower is now up and running. So happy. The Tower has always been Internet-free; it is where I do my original work in complete privacy. The Dell high-speed printer and the HP OfficeJet got a deep cleaning and new inks and now are up and running. And the Canon Pixma scanner and Internet printer, which we’ve hardly used, got all new inks for the New Year.
I had a sports leg injury in mid-summer that has now completely healed. Tom had a recurrence of a back injury he suffered when he was eighteen years old, but he’s on the mend. And Athena—well, she is ever Athena. Happy, hungryhungryhungry, lively, inventive, supersmart, beautiful, and loving. A true member of our household.

In the September-October 68th Anniversary issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, I published “Riddle.” Here’s one review of many: “Lisa Mason’s ‘Riddle’ is a short fantasy story about a struggling San Francisco artist who is dumped by his ambitious lawyer girl-friend. He goes out, gets drunk, fails to score with the bar’s new waitress and staggers home, only to find a half-naked woman hiding behind the bins outside his apartment. He lives in a crummy end of town, so doesn’t want to leave her outside. However, he’s also suspicious of being robbed by a stranger. Common humanity eventually triumphs and he lets her in for the night, only to find out that she’s a lot stranger than he could possibly have imagined. This is a well-executed supernatural story which brings a fascinating mythical being into a contemporary context and has a lot of fun with what happens next. In the same vein, I published “Felicitas,” another dark modern fantasy with erotic overtones told from the point of view of a shapeshifter. The story originally appeared in an anthology, Desire Burn: Women Writing from the Dark Side of Passion (Carroll & Graf), edited by Janet Berliner. The story was republished in Strange Ladies: 7 Stories. In The San Francisco Book Review, critic David Marshall wrote: “One of the joys of reading collections is getting a better sense of an author’s range. In this instance, Strange Ladies offers everything you could possibly want, from more traditional science fiction and fantasy tropes to thought-provoking explorations of gender issues and pleasing postmodern humor. As I was reorganizing some files, I came across the full text of this review of Strange Ladies: 7 Stories that was published in the Book Brothers Blog. Here ‘tis:
“When the Book Brothers first received a copy of Strange Ladies: 7 Stories, we were immediately intrigued by the title. What can we say, there has always been a soft spot in our hearts for strange ladies. So, we decided to tackle Strange Ladies immediately and the results were not disappointing (no pun intended).
Strange Ladies is a short and easy read you can probably breeze through in a quiet evening or two. The 7 shorts presented are all entirely different from one another, each creating a vibrant picture of its setting and inhabitants. Even the character dialogue in each story is clearly defined. Lisa Mason does not strike us as an author not willing to take chances.
The first tale is titled, The Oniomancer. It follows a Chinese-American bicycle messenger by the name of Chinadoll. Chinadoll is a punk rocker, living in a world full of eccentric characters. She has a penchant for finding things and one day comes across a strange item in the streets. This object will change her life forever.
Guardian tells the tale of a Vaughn Kennedy, a woman purchasing her first home. Vaughn is very much like you and me, struggling over simple day-to-day decisions. However, when a thief threatens the neighborhood, Vaughn turns to an unlikely source for protection.
The story Felicitas introduces us to yet another Strange Lady. In this tale, we are introduced to a young Mexican illegal immigrant who also happens to be a shape shifter. She sits in her cell awaiting her execution and reflects on her past.
Stripper follows an exotic dancer by the name of Sashi, who has the unique ability to bend the space-time continuum. This story is complex, but has some interesting underlying themes challenging preconceived notions about female sexuality and gender roles. Oh, and she also fights the mafia.
In Triad, we are introduced to Dana Anad, who lives half the time as a woman and the other half as a man. This is another gender bending tale that challenges traditional male/female roles. It is a unique love story not quite like anything we have ever read before.
Destination was inspired by an actual event in Lisa Mason’s life. In it, the female lead, Sal, decides to take three strangers cross-country in exchange for gas money. While they are traveling, the radio warns of a serial killer on the prowl. What starts off as a traditional horror tale soon becomes much more with twists and turns on the road you won’t see coming.
Finally, Transformation and the Postmodern Identity Crisis, tells the story of what happened to Wonderland after Alice decided to stumble through the rabbit hole. This is far darker territory than Tim Burton ever dared take such classic characters, though told with humor and wit.
Each story is cleverly crafted and unique. You won’t feel like you are treading over rehashed plot devices on this journey. This is not literature for those lacking in brain cells. These stories are complex and often require the reader to venture outside of their normal “reality”.
Lisa Mason might just be the female Philip K. Dick. Like Dick, Mason’s stories are far more than just sci-fi tales, they are brimming with insight into human consciousness and the social condition.
Strange Ladies: 7 Stories is a sci-fi collection of excellent quality. If you like deeply crafted worlds with strange, yet relatable characters, then you won’t want to miss it.”

Tell us a bit about “Riddle.”
As a writer and a reader, I’m much more interested in inner space than outer space. In stories about people living on society’s fringe than in starship captains or kings. In tales exploring consciousness, gender, and identity than in tales of derring-do, fisticuffs, and gun battles. (Though there are some fisticuffs in “Riddle.”)
I prefer tight, bold prose and try to achieve that effect in “Riddle.”
What was the inspiration for this story, or what prompted you to write it?
I have no idea—for once. This is one of the darkest stories I’ve ever written. I will say I wanted to set a supernatural story in my fascinating old neighborhood of North Beach in San Francisco.
“Riddle” is what bubbled out of my subconscious mind.
Was “Riddle” personal to you in any way? If so, how?
Oh, yes! I lived for some years in North Beach with my husband, Tom Robinson. Tom has degrees from the San Francisco Art Institute, the Academy of Art University, and the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts. He’s a working artist, jeweler, and sculptor and at the time, he’d gotten the lease on a dream art studio.
The place was an entire flat above a belly dancing club in a Stick-Eastlake Victorian building on Broadway between Montgomery Street and Columbus Avenue. Twenty-foot ceilings, an entire wall of exposed brick, another of floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelves.
Half a block west on Broadway is Enrico’s with its broad patio where, at three in the morning, we would see U2, Diana Ross, and Bill Cosby (yes, he was a foul-mouthed jerk even then). Two blocks down to Columbus and half a block up to the intersection of Grant Avenue and Vallejo Street is the Caffé Trieste, a coffeehouse situated at that location since 1956. The Beat poets congregated there—Philip Lamantia, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Bob Kaufman, Allen Ginsberg, and William Burroughs. Burroughs published science fiction in F&SF! Or at least his novel, Nova Express, was reviewed in F&SF in the 1960s.
I took Bruce Sterling to the Trieste when he was in town for the premier issue of Wired Magazine. Bruce was on the cover and a number of people were reading Wired when we walked in. Surreal!
[I neglected the add that Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay for “The Godfather” on a portable typewriter at a back table in the Trieste. I myself never saw him there, so that may be an urban legend, but husband Tom swears it is true.]
Around the corner was the Roma Caffé. I took Robert Silverberg there for pizza and Ellen Datlow for omelets on the back patio.
When you head two blocks down on Columbus Avenue, you’ll find Vesuvio, another gathering place for nearly sixty years. My favorite spot is the John Wilkes Booth on the mezzanine.
So North Beach is a very cool neighborhood. Coolness isn’t enough to drive a story, though. I needed a high concept. A supernatural high concept. I found that in “Riddle.”
Can you tell us about any of the research you may have done for this story?
Once I had my supernatural hook, I researched (plot spoiler alert!) sphinxes.
The classic legend tells of the sphinx in the desert who waylays travelers and poses a riddle. If a traveler can’t produce the answer, she kills and devours them.
Then Ulysses on his travels encountered the sphinx. She asked, “What walks on four legs at sunrise, two legs at noon, and three legs at sunset? When he correctly answered, “Man. As a baby he crawls on hands and knees. As an adult he walks on his own two legs. And as elderly, he walks with a cane.” Infuriated, the sphinx turned to stone and that’s what we see before the Great Pyramid in Egypt.
Greek and ancient Egyptian iconography portray the sphinx as a male animal—a man’s head and chest atop a lion’s body like the Great Sphinx at Giza. French sphinxes from the Louis the Fourteenth era, however, depict sphinxes as voluptuously female. (Leave it to the French!)
I knew I wanted my sphinx to be voluptuously, wickedly female.
What would you want a reader to take away from “Riddle?”
That love is complicated. Human consciousness is complicated. And life…you can’t be too sure about life. Fiction is meant to provide structure for our chaotic reality. I strove to make that point in “Anything For You,” published in the September-October 2016 F&SF. But sometimes fiction needs to point out the chaos.

What are you working on now?
I’ve just published a short novel, One Day in the Life of Alexa, with my ebook publisher, Bast Books, for the purpose of placing it in an international fiction competition with a 20,000 pound prize. Also, I’ve just re-released in print Summer of Love, a Philip K. Dick Award Finalist, and The Gilded Age (originally titled The Golden Nineties), a New York Times Notable Book. This is an Author’s Preferred Edition set, with Tom Robinson’s beautiful covers. Both are feminist historical novels as well as extrapolations into the far future when women’s issues—and humanity’s issues—have taken a different turn. Those two books are as timely as ever and I’m very glad to republish them in print and as ebooks worldwide on all the retailers.

As I mulled over my short fiction, I found seven wildly different stories with one thing in common–a heroine totally unlike me. I’m the girl next door. I have no idea where these strange ladies came from.
In The Oniomancer (Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine), a Chinese-American punk bicycle messenger finds an artifact on the street. In Guardian (Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine), an African-American gallerist resorts to voodoo to confront a criminal. In Felicitas (Desire Burn: Women Writing from the Dark Side of Passion [Carroll and Graf]), an illegal Mexican immigrant faces life as a cat shapeshifter. In Stripper (Unique Magazine), an exotic dancer battles the Mob. In Triad (Universe 2 [Bantam]), Dana Anad lives half the time as a woman, half as a man, and falls in love with a very strange lady. In Destination (Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction), a driver takes three strangers from a ride board on a cross-country trip as the radio reports that a serial killer is on the loose. In Transformation and the Postmodern Identity Crisis (Fantastic Alice [Ace]), Alice considers life after Wonderland.
