A Friend on Facebook posted a question: “How do you write a science fiction story?”

Dozens of people responded with things like, “After a shot of whiskey,” “After crying a lot,” “Slowly and painfully.”

I added my proverbial two cents, “They write themselves, of course.” But then I went on to describe how certain stories did come to be–and get published in magazines.

While the subject is on my mind, I’ll draft some blogs about the topic in the next week or so. I’m actually always curious how writers got inspired. And what research they did…..

Strange Ladies Cover Final

As I mulled over my short fiction, I found seven wildly different stories with one thing in common–a heroine totally unlike me. I’m the girl next door. I have no idea where these strange ladies came from.

In The Oniomancer (Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine), a Chinese-American punk bicycle messenger finds an artifact on the street. In Guardian (Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine), an African-American gallerist resorts to voodoo to confront a criminal. In Felicitas (Desire Burn: Women Writing from the Dark Side of Passion [Carroll and Graf]), an illegal Mexican immigrant faces life as a cat shapeshifter. In Stripper (Unique Magazine), an exotic dancer battles the Mob. In Triad (Universe 2 [Bantam]), Dana Anad lives half the time as a woman, half as a man, and falls in love with a very strange lady. In Destination (Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction), a driver takes three strangers from a ride board on a cross-country trip as the radio reports that a serial killer is on the loose. In Transformation and the Postmodern Identity Crisis (Fantastic Alice [Ace]), Alice considers life after Wonderland.

Five stars on Facebook and Amazon! “Great work, Lisa Mason!”

“Hilarious, provocative, profound.”

From Jeanne-Mary Allen, Author on Facebook and the BookBrothers Blog: “Kyle Wylde and I are thrilled to have found such a talented, dedicated, and brilliant collection of shorts in Strange Ladies: 7 Stories…Your style/craft is highly impressive.”

From the San Francisco Book Review: “Strange Ladies: 7 Stories offers everything you could possibly want, from more traditional science fiction and fantasy tropes to thought-provoking explorations of gender issues and pleasing postmodern humor…This is a must-read collection.” http://anotheruniverse.com/strange-ladies-7-stories/

From the Book Brothers Review Blog: “Lisa Mason might just be the female Phillip K. Dick. Like Dick, Mason’s stories are far more than just sci-fi tales, they are brimming with insight into human consciousness and the social condition….Strange Ladies: 7 Stories is a sci-fi collection of excellent quality. If you like deeply crafted worlds with strange, yet relatable characters, then you won’t want to miss it.” http://www.thebookbrothers.com/2013/09/the-book-brothers-review-strange.html#more

“Riddle,” a dark contemporary fantasy that just sold to The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. F&SF has been published continuously since 1949, taking the honors of the longest running genre magazine in America. Maybe in the world. Stephen King, Ursula K. Le Guin, and other luminaries (some unexpected, like William Burroughs) have published stories in its pages.

“Riddle” is my second sale to C.C. Finlay, a distinguished author himself and the editor of F&SF for over two years now. Charlie acquired “Anything For You,” which ran in the September-October 2016 issue.

Before that, I published “Teardrop” in the May-June 2015 issue and “Tomorrow Is A Lovely Day” in the November-December 2015 issue. Those stories were acquired by the then-editor and publisher of F&SF, the Hugo Award-winning Gordon Van Gelder.

And way before that, I published “Destination” in 1995. That story is republished in my collection Strange Ladies: 7 Stories. Worldwide links for the ebook are below.

So that amounts to five stories published in F&SF! The magazine is my go-to destination for reading and submitting stories. Here’s to many more!

Riddle” will be my thirtieth published story altogether. I’ve published in other magazines such as Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine, in magazines that no longer exist (Omni, Unique), and in anthologies (Full Spectrum 5, Universe 2, David Copperfield’s Tales of the Impossible, The Shimmering Door, Fantastic Alice, and Peter S. Beagle’s Immortal Unicorn).

I love anthologies, as a reader and a writer. As a 2016 Philip K. Dick Award judge, I received four anthologies. I’ve given away most of the books submitted for the award, but kept the anthologies for my collection.

Some anthologies are open-ended (Full Spectrum, Universe). Anything goes. Some revolve around a theme that the editor chooses. As for themed anthologies, those with what seem to be rather broad themes (post-apocalypse) may produce stories that are depressingly similar. Only two out of twenty of the post-apoc stories held any interest for me. Whereas anthologies with a more narrow theme (Fantastic Alice, Immortal Unicorn) offered a rich and surprising diversity of stories. Strange, isn’t it? Just my observation.

So there you have it, my friends. In addition to the Strange Ladies collection, I’ve given some stories their own ebooks, including Hummers (Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine), Daughter of the Tao (Immortal Unicorn), Every Mystery Unexplained (Tales of the Impossible), Tomorrow’s Child (Omni), and The Sixty-third Anniversary of Hysteria (Full Spectrum 5). Arachne (Omni) is included in the short memoir about inspirations My Charlotte: Patty’s Story. Enjoy!

Breaking news!

I just sold another story, Tomorrow Is A Lovely Day (at about 7,500 words), to The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

This is a traditional print magazine available on newsstands. Here’s the link to their site and their description. You will find all the information you need about how to order a subscription, order a single issue, submit your own story, and obtain ebook versions on Amazon.

https://www.sfsite.com/fsf/ The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, founded in 1949, is the award-winning SF magazine which is the original publisher of SF classics like Stephen King’s Dark Tower, Daniel Keyes’s Flowers for Algernon, and Walter M. Miller’s A Canticle for Leibowitz. Each double-sized bimonthly issue offers:
–compelling short fiction by writers such as Ray Bradbury, Ursula K. Le Guin, Terry Bisson and many others;
–the science fiction field’s most respected and outspoken opinions on Books, Films and Science;
–humor from our cartoonists and writers.

I published a story, “Destination,” in F&SF some years ago under a previous editor. I’m proud and thrilled to become a part of this wonderful magazine again!

My story “Teardrop” will be published in the May/June 2015 F&SF issue.

I’ll announce the pub date of “Tomorrow Is A Lovely Day” when I have that information.

So there you have it, my friends. I’ll be writing more in this blog about hybrid publishing, which became my serious goal in June of 2014 after four years of independently publishing my backlist and a couple of new titles as ebooks.

I’m glad to have met that goal so soon this year! And intend to ramp things up in 2015. I’ll let you know how this strategy is working out.

All the titles listen below are also on Amazon.com in Australia, Mexico, and the Netherlands. I haven’t had time to hunt down the links! But if you’re in those countries, please search for my name and the title, and you’ll be sure to find what you’re looking for. Thank you!
