The year is 1941, and Hitler’s armies are sweeping across Europe.

Nora, a budding young Surrealist artist, has fled to Mexico with B.B., a much older and acclaimed Surrealist playwright down on his luck. Hundreds of European artists and writers have formed a colony in Mexico City, and Nora befriends Valencia, a fellow Surrealist artist and refugee.

Together the friends explore Jungian psychology and the power of symbols in their extraordinary, visionary Art.

But Nora is plagued by an abusive relationship with B.B. She embarks on a harrowing journey of the soul deep into her own troubled psyche.

Inspired by the lives and friendship of the brilliant Surrealist artists Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington.

A summary of the artists’ lives and a list of Sources follows the novelette.

The year is 1895, and Danny Flint is a young man living in the shadow of his controlling father, Professor Flint, a famous stage magician whose fortunes are fading. Uncle Brady, Professor Flint’s trusted assistant and business manager and Danny’s best friend, cannot stay in the same hotel as them—Uncle Brady is African-American.

Danny is grieving over his mother’s recent accidental death. After a contentious relationship with her, he feels he’s to blame.

When Zena Troubetskoy, a beautiful mysterious lady, asks them to help her contact her husband, Danny and his father will confront the ethical dilemma between spiritualist séances and faked séances performed by stage magicians like them.

But things are not as they seem.

With Zena’s help, Danny will learn to reconcile himself with his grief and guilt, learn the astonishing secret of Uncle Brady’s identity, and assume his place at center stage as a talented magician in his own right.

Every Mystery Unexplained was published in David Copperfield’s Tales of the Impossible (HarperPrism), a hardcover anthology including stories by fantasy masters like Ray Bradbury, Joyce Carol Oates, and F. Paul Wilson.

Every Mystery Unexplained is on BarnesandNoble, US Kindle, Canada Kindle, UK Kindle, Apple, Kobo, and Smashwords.

is also on Amazon.com in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, and India.

Here’s a review from a respected book blogger:
“Magician ‘Professor’ Flint ends each performance by endeavoring to contact the Spirits of the Dead. An illusion only, of course. Surely, the audience knows that the white handkerchief dancing around the stage is the work of Flint’s assistants, not spirits. His sword fight with an apparition is only a matter of a well-placed pane of glass and proper lighting. No one can really contact the dead. Unfortunately, when lovely Zena Troubetzskoy offers the down-on-their-luck magic act a fat payment for a séance, Flint and his son, Daniel, can’t say no. But there is more to Zena and the man she wishes to contact, the man she left in the mountains, than meets the eye.
This is the type of story I was hoping for from these anthologies: a blend of fiction and magic history. The setting is 1895 San Francisco. Professor Flint and his act have been trekking westward through cow-towns, railroad towns, and mining towns, complete with horses, wagons, and misfortunes. Quite similar to Howard Thurston’s tour of, as Mason puts it, the far West. The story is a nice juxtaposition between the magic ethos and spiritualism ethos and the Victorian era and the Old West. Mason knows her magic history (the title is from a Harry Kellar quote) and she knows San Francisco.”

“Riddle,” a dark contemporary fantasy that just sold to The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. F&SF has been published continuously since 1949, taking the honors of the longest running genre magazine in America. Maybe in the world. Stephen King, Ursula K. Le Guin, and other luminaries (some unexpected, like William Burroughs) have published stories in its pages.

“Riddle” is my second sale to C.C. Finlay, a distinguished author himself and the editor of F&SF for over two years now. Charlie acquired “Anything For You,” which ran in the September-October 2016 issue.

Before that, I published “Teardrop” in the May-June 2015 issue and “Tomorrow Is A Lovely Day” in the November-December 2015 issue. Those stories were acquired by the then-editor and publisher of F&SF, the Hugo Award-winning Gordon Van Gelder.

And way before that, I published “Destination” in 1995. That story is republished in my collection Strange Ladies: 7 Stories. Worldwide links for the ebook are below.

So that amounts to five stories published in F&SF! The magazine is my go-to destination for reading and submitting stories. Here’s to many more!

Riddle” will be my thirtieth published story altogether. I’ve published in other magazines such as Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine, in magazines that no longer exist (Omni, Unique), and in anthologies (Full Spectrum 5, Universe 2, David Copperfield’s Tales of the Impossible, The Shimmering Door, Fantastic Alice, and Peter S. Beagle’s Immortal Unicorn).

I love anthologies, as a reader and a writer. As a 2016 Philip K. Dick Award judge, I received four anthologies. I’ve given away most of the books submitted for the award, but kept the anthologies for my collection.

Some anthologies are open-ended (Full Spectrum, Universe). Anything goes. Some revolve around a theme that the editor chooses. As for themed anthologies, those with what seem to be rather broad themes (post-apocalypse) may produce stories that are depressingly similar. Only two out of twenty of the post-apoc stories held any interest for me. Whereas anthologies with a more narrow theme (Fantastic Alice, Immortal Unicorn) offered a rich and surprising diversity of stories. Strange, isn’t it? Just my observation.

So there you have it, my friends. In addition to the Strange Ladies collection, I’ve given some stories their own ebooks, including Hummers (Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine), Daughter of the Tao (Immortal Unicorn), Every Mystery Unexplained (Tales of the Impossible), Tomorrow’s Child (Omni), and The Sixty-third Anniversary of Hysteria (Full Spectrum 5). Arachne (Omni) is included in the short memoir about inspirations My Charlotte: Patty’s Story. Enjoy!

Here’s my interview for “Anything For You,” my story in the September-October 2016 Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. You can find it online at https://www.sfsite.com/fsf/blog/2016/10/17/interview-anything-for-you-by-lisa-mason/

– Tell us a bit about “Anything for You.”

Sometimes writers find their characters taking on a life of their own. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle famously became jealous of his character, Sherlock Holmes, who was more famous than the author himself. Conan Doyle tried to kill off Sherlock Holmes, but Holmes refused to die. Perhaps, too, the fans refused to let Holmes die.

Readers, especially fans, also experience the phenomenon of fiction becoming more real in their imaginations than reality. When a character whom fans love does something fictitiously they don’t approve of, fans get angry.

What if fans could interactively participate in the creative process? The emotional stakes would be high.

– What was the inspiration for this story, or what prompted you to write it?

My longtime friend and colleague, the German writer and editor Myra Çakan, asked me to contribute a story to an anthology which she’d titled Interactive. She envisioned all sorts of scenarios of modern life that could be interactive in a slightly futuristic way. That got my creative wheels turning.

That’s what I love about being invited to contribute to themed anthologies. The editor’s vision inspires me to explore directions I might not otherwise go. I wrote an 1890s stage magic story, Every Mystery Unexplained, for David Copperfield’s Tales of the Impossible and a Chinese unicorn story, Daughter of the Tao, for Peter S. Beagle’s Immortal Unicorn, among many other stories and anthologies. If those editors hadn’t proposed a theme, I would never have researched and written those stories.

Myra had a German publisher lined up and maybe a dozen writers, including me and, I believe, William Gibson.

Then the German publisher, as apparently German publishers are wont to do, folded before the project could get up and running.

So there I was with a story without a home. Since F&SF is The New Yorker of genre magazines, that seemed like a great place to submit the story. And it was!

– Was “Anything for You” personal to you in any way? If so, how?

I don’t understand fandom. I appreciate certain writers, singers, artists, and actors, of course, but I don’t obsess over their output or them, personally.

Some years ago, I attended a science fiction discussion group held at a member’s home. I excused myself to use the bathroom and was shocked to see that she had a lovingly framed picture of Mr. Spock on her bathroom wall! What was that about?

So I wanted to explore a fan’s obsession from the inside out.

– What would you want a reader to take away from this story?

That no matter how hard anyone tries—family members, spouse, or the government—they ultimately can’t control you. Especially your thoughts and emotions and who you choose to love.

One of our unique human gifts is that we can always choose how to react to life. No one can ever take our inner choices away from us.

– What are you working on now?

New stories and novellas, of course!

I’m working on uploading the rest of my backlist as ebooks. My ebook publisher, Bast Books, just published Arachne on all major retailers worldwide. Arachne, a “cyberpunk,” is my first novel, which was published in hardcover by William Morrow, trade paper by Eos Books, and mass market paperback by AvoNova books. Arachne debuted in the top ten on the Locus Magazine Hardcover List. I’m delighted to send the book, newly re-edited, back out into the reading world.

I’ve only got three more backlist books to go, Cyberweb, the sequel to Arachne, and my two Pangaea books. Then I’m all caught up.

Going forward, I’m excited to announce that I have signed with a major New York literary agency and am working on a new high-concept SF novel.

And here are two reviews!

Anything for You” by Lisa Mason is a near future SF story of Willem’s obsession with Dr. Virginia Isley. She is not his wife—or even his girlfriend—but a fictional character in an interactive television show. For Willem love is all about control, but he soon finds that some people—real or not—refuse to be controlled.
Mason does a masterful job here telling this in the form of a television script, including the plot options Willem is allowed to choose. . . . an enjoyable read.

Anything for You” by Lisa Mason -+- Willem has become obsessed with an interactive soap opera about a surgeon named Dr. Virginia Isley. He tries to control her life as much as he can but is constantly frustrated. His obsession ruins his marriage and things go even more downhill from there. A real chill at the end in another great story.

From the extinguished HomeWorld, the Settlers traveled across the stars to NewWorld with hopes of starting over again.

In the war-torn nation of Illyria, Maya just wants to grow vegetables and live in peace. But she has a dark secret she can never reveal, especially to her beloved Yuri.

Written in the tradition of Fritz Leiber’s classic, “The Man Who Never Grew Young,” and Martin Amis’s Time’s Arrow, uniquely told from a woman’s point of view. The story’s title is an homage to the 1959 film by Alain Resnais, “Hiroshima, Mon Amour.”

The ebook includes an Afterword.

For a limited time only, Bast Books is offering “Illyria, My Love” for 99 cents on all retailers worldwide.

I just received the Table of Contents of the September-October 2016 The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction! The issue should ship out to subscribers in two weeks or so. This is a special homage to David Gerrold coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, for which David wrote scripts. He’s also frequently published his delightful stories in the magazine. The FSF folks will be at the WorldCon in Kansas City this coming August 17, and through the weekend. I can’t be there, but if you go, please stop by the FSF table and say hi.

I’m pleased to say my story, “Anything For You,” will appear in this special issue.
