Genius. Visionary. Madman.

Nikola Tesla (1856–1943) was the pioneering genius who invented the AC electrical system that powers our world to this day, as well as radio, remote control, the automobile speedometer, X-ray photography, the AND logic gate that drives all our computer systems, and countless other devices and precursors to devices such as cell phones, television, and the Internet that we so effortlessly use today.

Strikingly handsome and charismatic, fluent in half a dozen languages, mathematics savant and master machinist, a reed-thin perfectionist who quoted poetry like a Victorian rapper, Tesla became one of the most famous men of his day. Friend of tycoons like John Jacob Astor and Stanford White and celebrities like Mark Twain and Sarah Bernhardt.

Yet Tesla was an intensely driven and lonely man, beset by inner demons, and cursed with a protean inventive imagination a century ahead of his time. He died in obscurity and poverty and, to this day, his name is not widely known. How did that happen?

Blending historical fact with speculative imagination, Lisa Mason explores the secrets of the Inventor’s inner life and his obsession with Goethe’s Faust set against the backdrop of sweeping technological changes at the turn of the twentieth century that have forever changed the world.

After a year of intensive research and writing, Mason got the Screenplay read by the producer of “Aliens,” “The Abyss,” and “The Hulk.” It will be off to another producer!

From My Inventions by Nikola Tesla (1916):

“With the World System power plant, it will be practicable to attain electrical activities up to ten million horsepower and to serve many technical achievements. Among these may be mentioned:
(1)  The inter-connection of existing telegraph exchanges all over the world;
(2)  The establishment of a secret and non-interferable government telegraph service;
(3)  The inter-connection of all telephone exchanges all over the world;
(4)  The universal distribution of news by telegraph or telephone in connection with the Press;
(5)  The establishment of World-System intelligence transmission for exclusive private use;
(6)  The inter-connection and operation of all stock tickers all over the world;
(7)  The establishment of a World-System of musical distribution;
(8)  The universal registration of time by clocks indicating the hour with astronomical precision and requiring no attention whatsoever;
(9)  The world transmission of typed or handwritten characters, letters, and checks;
(10) The establishment of a universal marine service enabling the navigators of all ships to steer perfectly without compass, to determine the exact location, hour, and speed, to prevent disasters and collisions;
(11) The inauguration of a system of world-printing on land and sea;
(12) The world reproduction of photographic pictures and all kinds of drawings or records.”

I was so intrigued by this remarkable man, I researched and wrote a full-length bio-pic, Tesla, A Worthy of His Time, A Screenplay, which has been read by the producer of “Aliens,” “The Abyss,” and “The Hulk,” and is still out on submission.

Tesla, A Worthy of His Time: A Screenplay was read by the producer of “Aliens,” “The Abyss,” and “The Hulk.”
