Know Thyself
The First Fundamental of Real Magic that Abby Teller learns at the Berkeley College of Magical Arts and Crafts is “Knowledge is Power.” And the First Fundamental of that principle is “Know Thyself.” The great philosopher and teacher Pythagoras coined that adage 2,500 years ago, but it still rings true today, especially in this age of media up to your eyeballs.
“Know Thyself.” What does that mean? It means think for yourself. Investigate and research issues, then exercise your own judgment and will independently of the crowd, independently of what the media tells you to think. Only then may you practice Real Magic in the real world.
Makes sense, doesn’t it?
Murder Most Foul
But Abby Teller going to magic college to learn how to master her power—so she can defend herself against the Horde—and Abby taking the job as super of the Garden of Abracadabra still wasn’t enough for me to launch a major new urban fantasy and keep it going for ten or twelve books (which I intend to do).
Abby picks up a handsome hitchhiker as she’s driving across the country to Berkeley. He turns out to be a sorcerer. When she’s compelled to hike up into the mountains outside campus, compelled deep into an old-growth forest, she discovers a supernatural multiple murder scene. And the hitchhiker is one of the victims.
Now she’s compelled into a murder mystery, her life is at stake, and our series takes off from there.
So there you have it, my friends. Set up and interweave subplots against your background material, and you’ve got a book and a series with staying power.
The Garden of Abracadabra, Volume 1 of the Abracadabra Series, is on BarnesandNoble, US Kindle, Canada Kindle, UK Kindle, Apple, Kobo, Sony, and Smashwords.
“So refreshing. . . .This is Stephanie Plum in the world of Harry Potter.”

Fun and Enjoyable Urban Fantasy

This is a very entertaining novel—sort of a down-to-earth Harry Potter with a modern adult woman in the lead. Even as Abby has to deal with mundane concerns like college and running the apartment complex she works at, she is surrounded by supernatural elements and mysteries that she is more than capable of taking on. Although this book is just the first in a series, it ties up the first “episode” while still leaving some story threads for upcoming books. I’m looking forward to finding out more.
Coming soon! The Labyrinth of Illusions, Volume 2 of the Abracadabra Series!
