February 6, 2023 issue of The New Yorker, has an article, “The First Composer: Hildegard of Bingen’s visionary music” by Alex Ross. Hildegard von Bingen, was an amazing woman (1098—1179). A genius. She lived in Germany’s Rhineland Valley. She was the youngest of ten children and her parents donated her to the Church (I guess parents could do that in those days.) She became a nun when she was a teenager, eventually became the abbess of a large and prosperous abbey. She was a prominent writer, poet, scientist, physician, herbalogist, music composer, and visionary. She received mystical visions throughout her life, but started to describe them when she was forty-two years old and developed her own theology. Some suggest if she were a man, she would have been world-famous. Today, vast numbers have heard of her, read her poems, and play her music.
