Tom and I saw three movies for St. Patrick’s weekend. The first two films he bought for a nickel at our wonderful library. The third, a neighbor gave to us. He didn’t want to see the film anymore; I can see why.
“Amarcord”, the title loosely means “I Remember”, is a film by Federico Fellini. The DVD comes with a booklet by a film professor. He admits the film hasn’t got much of a plot. Episodes of Fellini’s life are shown helter-skelter; the loosely constructed plot could be of Fellini’s mother’s life. She is shown serving food to the fiercely argumentative family, then she is shown tending her son while he has a fever talking about marriage, then she’s shown in the hospital having an illness herself, and dying. Everybody in town goes to the funeral. Only recommended (pleasantly) for viewers who want to see Italian life in a small coastal town. In Italian with English subtitles.
“Antz”. Yes, this is an animated film. Dreamworks animation is much different than Pixar’s (I like Pixar’s better). But work was put into this movie and, like “Finding Nemo”, the story is adult. Serious discussion of what being ant in an ant colony entails. Many famous actors lend their voices to the characters, starting with Woody Allen. He is the psychologically conflicted worker ant Z, who becomes a hero. Recommended for viewers who like to see animated films with an adult story.
“Watchmen: The Director’s Cut”. There is “violent”, “very violent”, “bloodily violent”, and “grotesquely violent”. Those are four categories and all apply to this film. The premise is this: in a wildly alternate U.S.A. (Nixon serves as President three times), all of the superheroes have retired. Then one retired superhero is murdered, and the rest feel threatened. The superheroes all have their backstory and, this being Director’s Cut, their backstories are told. Some good dialogue. Overlong. Weird. Only recommended for viewers who enjoy seeing violence.
