10.18.17.3.ATHENA.IN.BOX_NEW

I bake fresh ground turkey thigh for Athena and prepare little dishes of that, topped or mixed with Whole Paws canned meat (the turkey and the chicken and white fish flavors). Cats are obligate carnivores; they need meat.

I don’t leave out a bowl of dry food. She had a bad reaction to dry food when she first came to live with us so I just don’t feed her that anymore. The Whole Paws canned meat has no grain whatsoever, not even brown rice, but the dry food, even the best dry food I could find with a low ash content, has rice. Plus, it’s not true that dry food helps clean a cat’s teeth. My research says dry food has no beneficial effect on a cat’s dental health. Instead, we “brush” her teeth with dental sponges at least once a week.

As a result of this feeding regimen, Athena is very trim and muscular. What this means, though, is that when I set out a little dish of meat, she has to finish it all or back into the fridge the dish goes, covered by a little white cap. (To prevent food poisoning just like you should put leftovers from your Thanksgiving feast in the fridge no later than two hours after the food is cooked). A local pet food store gave Tom a dozen of these caps, which you use to cover uneaten portions of canned food. Note that the cans say not to do this, to store uneaten meat in another container. Which I do. I’ve got a glass container with a top in which I store uneaten canned meat.

What this also means is Athena, a nocturnal predator, prefers to eat late at night or in the early morning. When I’m sleeping. She often has to wake me up, and she’s devised a strategy. She jumps up on the bed (she’s strictly an in-door cat, so she’s very clean) by my head and snuffles in my ear. She gives my cheek little kitty kisses, and then she seizes the edge of my ear in her fangs and PULLS just as hard as she can. Sometimes she pulls my head off the pillow (she’s very strong). Sometimes she draws blood. I say “Ouch ouch ouch,” in a pitiable voice, but I also laugh so she knows I don’t mind it too  much. This morning Tom watched as she yanked my right ear, then circled over my head and yanked on my left.

This generally gets me out of bed and into the kitchen to set out one of her little bowls of meat. She left particularly bloody wounds on my right ear. I asked Tom to photograph the ear; he refused. Oh, well, it IS pretty weird. #ivegotcatbitesonmyears

ALEXA.CVR.MED.LARGE.5.17.17

From Goodreads comes the first review of One Day in the Life of Alexa:

“One Day in the Life of Alexa, by Lisa Mason (Bast Books, 2017) incorporates lively prose, past/present time jumps, and the consequences of longevity technology. Kosovo refugee Alexa enrolls in a secret pilot program designed to extend her life span. Her best friend, Marya, is not accepted, but Marya’s infant aka “Little Monster” is. As the decades roll by, Alexa adapts to a life of constant measurement and surveillance. And youth, for she ages only very slowly (and Little Monster takes years to achieve what normal babies do in months) and in her mid-fifties still appears as a very young adult. Every so often, disaster strikes, whether the Moon fracturing into “lunettes” or a supervolcano eruption or a terrorist bombing, but Alexa always manages to survive. Although the Testers are carefully separated from one another, she manages to connect with one, the only man who can understand what her life is like; after a period of pastel, childless marital bliss, he falls over dead due to a “lethal gene.” In reflection, the book is as much about the enduring trauma of war as it is about longevity technology, and in this it feels more like mainstream than science fiction. Mason’s skill as a writer sustains what might be better executed as a novella into a short novel. Still, it’s a quick, absorbing read with an appealing narrator and subtly powerful emotional rhythms (like the repeated refrain, “No matter how long I live, I will always remember this”).”  https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35200314-one-day-in-the-life-of-alexa#other_reviews

At her mother’s urgent deathbed plea, Abby Teller enrolls at the Berkeley College of Magical Arts and Crafts to learn Real Magic. To support herself through school, she signs on as the superintendent of the Garden of Abracadabra, a mysterious, magical apartment building on campus.

She discovers that her tenants are witches, shapeshifters, vampires, and wizards and that each apartment is a fairyland or hell.

On her first day in Berkeley, she stumbles upon a supernatural multiple murder scene. One of the victims is a man she picked up hitchhiking the day before.

Torn between three men—Daniel Stern, her ex-fiance who wants her back, Jack Kovac, an enigmatic FBI agent, and Prince Lastor, a seductive supernatural entity who lives in the penthouse and may be a suspect—Abby will question what she really wants and needs from a life partner.

Compelled into a dangerous murder investigation, Abby will discover the first secrets of an ancient and ongoing war between Humanity and Demonic Realms, uncover mysteries of her own troubled past, and learn that the lessons of Real Magic may spell the difference between her own life or death.

“So refreshing. . . .This is Stephanie Plum in the world of Harry Potter.”
Goodreads: “I loved the writing style and am hungry for more!”

Amazon.com: “Fun and enjoyable urban fantasy”
This is a very entertaining novel—sort of a down-to-earth Harry Potter with a modern adult woman in the lead. Even as Abby has to deal with mundane concerns like college and running the apartment complex she works at, she is surrounded by supernatural elements and mysteries that she is more than capable of taking on. Although this book is just the first in a series, it ties up the first “episode” while still leaving some story threads for upcoming books. I’m looking forward to finding out more.”

From the extinguished HomeWorld, the Settlers traveled across the stars to NewWorld with hopes of starting over again.

In the war-torn nation of Illyria, Maya just wants to grow vegetables and live in peace. But she has a dark secret she can never reveal, especially to her beloved Yuri.

Written in the tradition of Fritz Leiber’s classic, “The Man Who Never Grew Young,” and Martin Amis’s Time’s Arrow, uniquely told from a woman’s point of view. The story’s title is an homage to the 1959 film by Alain Resnais, “Hiroshima, Mon Amour.”

The ebook includes an Afterword.

For a limited time only, Bast Books is offering “Illyria, My Love” for 99 cents on all retailers worldwide.

I forgot what an angry book Arachne is, with plenty of satire about big law practice, big corporate politics, and social revolution. I even got to kill someone (fictitiously, fictitiously) who really had it coming. Some of the jokes are a bit obscure, I admit. “Adverse possession of telespace property,” Carly’s theory of how to win her mediation, is an oxymoron, a joke that mostly only intellectual property lawyers would chuckle over. I guess both the critics and my mother were a little bit shocked.

Arachne was published in hardcover by William Morrow, in trade paperback by Eos Books, and in mass market paperback by AvoNova, and published in Japan by Hayakawa. It debuted on the Locus Hardcover Bestseller List. Called by The Boston Globe, “a cyberpunk classic”, Arachne should be available tomorrow as an ebook from Bast Books.

Like I do with every project I’ve previously published in print and now publish as an ebook, I re-edited Arachne. Any changes and edits are intended to make all the work more fast-paced and focused.

For this book, the changes are cosmetic. Carly Nolan’s name has been changed to Carly Quester, since the book is about her quest to find herself. The law practice terminology has been changed to mediation practice and mediators, which is plausible for the future time in which the story is set and makes the story a bit more widely relatable. The term “mainframe,” already antiquated when I published the print book, has been changed to “sengine” (i.e. search + engine).

The rest is substantially the same and remains my attempt to merge futuristic computer technology with my life-long interest in symbology and the Jungian theory of the collective unconscious.

Many SF writers have remarked that it has become much more difficult to write about the future because the present so quickly catches up with and supercedes speculation. From all I’ve read recently about the state of AI, in Time and Wired and elsewhere, Arachne remains just ahead of the curve to this day. What do you think?

My first story “Arachne” was published by Omni when the magazine had a worldwide circulation of five million, in Japan by Hayakawa, in Sweden by Republik, and was discussed at some length in Cyberpunk Women, Feminism, and Science Fiction by Carlen Lavigne (McFarland & Co., Inc.).
